Blood sugar is under much better control for the past 3 weeks, but balancing basal insulin dosages so that fasting numbers are optimal is tedious and constant. Seems like a very small change in rate (.025 u/hr) can swing from 140 mg/dl AM to 40 mg/dl. When I can keep the liver from dumping glucose into the bloodstream, it is much easier to loose weight. Even if I have to take glucose tablets to bring low BGs up from time to time. The secret trick with low BGs is to not over eat to treat the symptoms. Taking a measured amount of glucose (I use Dex-4 tabs)and waiting is the best strategy. All the diabetes educators say to take 15g of glucose and wait 15 minutes, then recheck and retreat if necessary. Best strategy is to experiment on one's self to determine how much a gram of glucose will raise your blood sugar, then use that info to correct any lows accurately. For example, for me, I found by experimentation, that 1g of glucose will raise my bg by 9 mg/dl. So if I'm in the 50's, 1 Dex-4 tab will be sufficient. If I'm in the 40's, 2 will suffice.
