Nimm's Journal, 18 December 2012

OK, back on the scale.
Back at the start of the month, I developed some shoulder pain on the right side. It wasn't terrible, but it would worsen every time I did heavy chest exercises - so I started off by resting it through a deload week. I increased the calories to what should have been maintenance levels - if I'm not lifting heavy, I wanted the weight to hold steady for both rest and repair, and not invite any muscle loss while I was loafing around.

The week off only helped a little, so I went back to the doctor. Several expensive tests later, the diagnosis was some damage/sprain to the AC ligament in the shoulder. Not major, but a nuisance, and certainly a result of the aggressive chest work I'd been doing. Apparently moderation isn't just for dieting...

I was given a choice of doing nothing and getting a steroid injection in the ligament. I picked the injection - supposedly faster recovery (days instead of months). Shoulder hurt like hell for a few days after the injection, but it has mostly cleared up now and I've resumed lifting - doctor's orders, believe it or not. In fact, I was told not to baby it, and pick up where I left off on the lifting, which I haven't - still doing lighter weight on the chest exercises for now.

Anyway, I haven't bothered with the scale the whole time as I've been trying to stay at maintenance. Now that the lifting has resumed, I suppose I'll get back to dropping the last few pounds. I'm happy that the scale was off just 0.2 from where I left off - even just adding the several hundred calories the last few weeks has felt like a gluttonous binge.

Other than that, still trying to finish gift shopping, which I am entirely terrible at.
I've ordered my wife a Nikon D3100 camera - any photographers out there who can tell me if that was a mistake? It's not too late to swap if it was. I'm looking for a few other gifts so the pile isn't small and sad, though. You'd think by age 40 I'd have some idea how to buy gifts for my wife, but I'm always needing ideas. Which means suggestions are welcome if anyone wants to help out :)

The silver lining on this cloud is that she's equally bad at buying gifts so usually we just have a mutual understanding on that issue...

Ouch, sorry to hear about the shoulder issue but glad it is doing better! I feel your pain on the gifts.. my husband and I are the same way. We really struggle with buying each other stuff, mostly because we just buy things when we want them. Such is life! Camera sounds like a great purchase though (I know nothing about cameras.. nikons seem to be good though!)

Same input at Diane, I think a camera sounds like a nice idea, but know nothing about them! glad your shoulder was able to feel better after the injection. Did the doctor say when the steriod injection would wear off & possibly need to be done again? My coworker was getting them in an ankle/foot tendon for pain in her heel, and about 3 months later it would come back.

Bkeller - Yep. Especially now that we have a 4 year old, we both don't want more stuff in the house. It's nice having a wish list that's just about empty - our gifts are usually things like events, rather than things.

You amaze me at the detail with which you diet and exercise! Smart guy. Glad you got your shoulder dealt with too. My son bought me a nice Canon for my birthday last year but as a former photographer's assistant I always prefer Nikon. I do know that you want to be able to shoot wide angle - low as possible # on zoom - like 18mm (like for a room in a real estate photo) and to be able to zoom on someone's face close up across the room - over 200mm - 300mm is great. If you read my journal today you will see I prefer jewelry, perfume or somehting soft to electronics when I open a box but that is just me. So don't forget the perfume with the camera. :)

Jess - The steroid may or may not take care of it for good. That's what the "get right back to the heavy lifting once the pain wears off" instruction was for, to see how it responds. One shot might do it, sometimes 2 are needed. If 2 doesn't do it, they usually look at surgery next.

Neptunebch - Thanks for the advice on the lens, very helpful. I'll have to see what the camera is shipping with. On the other gifts issue - my wife isn't normally too interested in the standard "go-to" gifts for women (she has a tomboy streak in her), but she did leave a discount card for the local jeweler on my wallet. She insists it wasn't a hint, but maybe I shouldn't take that at face value :)

Sounds like you did a great job on the camera gift, Nimm, AND put it to good use. Hope your shoulder is better and I hope a wonderful new year for you and your wife.
