I had a reminder today to always keep in touch with people you care about. I did my two Zumba classes then headed in to my apartment with a bunch of cookies (including Snickerdoodles I made special for and old friend, DeDe)to go to a Holiday Dinner planning meeting. I offered to bring a ton of cookies, and everyone there enjoyed the ones I brought.

I headed up to DeDe's apartment after the meeting with a Christmas card and a nice big package of Snickerdoodles. I knocked on the door & a strange young man answered the door; said he'd moved in about 4 months ago & hadn't heard of DeDe.

I went & checked with a neighbor to see what was up, and discovered that DeDe had died several months ago. I knew she had health problems and was on borrowed time, but it still stunned me. She was always so full of piss and vinegar, so full of life even in a wheelchair and all.

I've been so busy with exercising and shopping and preparing healthy foods and making new friends at the gym that I haven't spent much time at my apartment building, just in and out. DeDe was one of the first friends I made when I moved in there in 1997. She's the one that loved the chocolate house I made her one year; kept in her freezer because she liked it too much to eat it, just kept it for a long time. We'd work puzzles together, I'd take her shopping, we'd sit and talk and laugh. She was always happy to see me when I'd run into her at my building; asked me for cookies the last time I saw her. I didn't realize how long ago that was. Wow. I should be happy for her, that she's no longer in pain, her sweetheart died before her (the naughty old dear had a torrid relationship that lasted for years). I just feel bad that I didn't say goodbye, pay my respects, and I'll miss her. Sigh.

So, drop a note or a text to an old friend that you haven't been in touch with. I'll make sure that my partner calls that old friend that lives in South Africa. I'll go visit another old friend, Richard, take him some cookies & a treat for his cat.
