SaintViper's Journal, 04 October 2012

So my sister's family came over on Sunday. High Command made a very nice brunch for them which they barely touched. She even warned them that brunch would be waiting for them when they got here.

Apparently they couldn't make the hour and fifteen minute drive without stopping for snacks. One overweight nephew (12 years old) had a 48oz slushie and the other overweight nephew (10 year old) had a 24oz hot chocolate with them.

My sister is overweight too and has tons of health problems because of it including type 2 diabetes. If she wants to do that to herself I guess that's ok. You would think my dad dying at 59 from obesity related health problems would make an impact but I guess not. But to be doing that to yourself and then seeing it happen to your kids and not only not do anything about it, but to actively promote it is just wrong. I just don't get it.

Actually, she did mention that they are cutting back on the older one's calories. They had him stop drinking milk.

MUST RESIST RANT HERE. seriously? drop the milk, which has oh, calcium, vits A & D and some protein, and throw a 48 oz slushie at him. GOOD idea. This is the kind of thing that is really all over the news right now isn't it? The story on FB and even here on FS about the news anchor woman who is overweight and received a letter about it from a viewer. Where it has now gone viral because she "stood up to her bully". Then is it about bullying? Is it about being obese? Is it about public image? Is it about society? Is it about setting an example? I think what it really boils down to is exactly what you are saying. It's about the choices we all make. And how those choices affect those we are RESPONSIBLE for influencing. If your sister's family continues to make choices about how they eat that are not doing their health any good, that's one thing. If it's going to have ramifications on others (such as learned behavior towards their children) that's another thing. Look at your kids. You are doing something right there!

High Command gets all he credit, but I'll take a little for not sabotaging her efforts and maybe even chipping in a little on the positive side.

And while I'm indulging myself in a rant as well, she was telling us about the great dinner they had a Pappa John's (pizza) the night before. About how great the cinnamon pizza was for dessert. Not a huge deal in and of itself but in the context of knowing that they probably eat fast food 4-5 times a week and their favorite restaurant is a pizza buffet, it's just that much more annoying.

Gack!! Right? I have been known to hit Papa Murphy's when a) family is in town and I just don't have the time/energy to prep a huge meal cuz something else is going on or b) I have been gone riding hard all day and I want something fast and salty and hot when I am done. But I try to offset it with my own addition of tons of veggies, and a side salad. And I DON'T buy the two liters of pop, tubs of cookie dough, and *gag* s'mores dessert pizza. Not even the cheesey breadsticks. I remember when they pro-mo'ed the s'mores dessert pizza...I was sitting in there getting my pizza made. I think of the 20 people I saw offered, maybe two tried it. Everyone else gave them a look of "ew!". I was quite shocked that they still carry it. My guess is it didn't do well in Hood River, but other parts of the state/country it did. And not sabotaging HC's efforts is huge. Because there are way too many people out there who love the company of misery.
