Vickiauntmick's Journal, 12 August 2018

The past month: Had a mini breakdown over my dad. Developed new friendships with coworkers who always want to go out to eat. Started drinking beer and bourbon more (not out of stress, just casually/socially), started eating meat and fried crap again (which has trippled my salt intake too). Istopped relying on all this fabulous produce I'm growing at home (I was throwing out half of everything I picked because it was going bad). My heel and calf pain came back so I stopped walking every evening. My insomnia has been way worse, I feel depressed, and I havent pooped twice a day like when I eat veggies so I feel miserable in my belly.
People ask me all the time why I went vegan. Without pissing off vegans... I didn't do it for the animals or environment. I did it because it helped me feel better. Now I feel like shit again. Now I remember why, because even I forgot. I haven't weighed in for over a month because I was scared. I honestly thought I was back up to 245 or 250 again. I had to brace myself to look. I think I can mentally deal with 4 pounds up.
I'm ok. I'm in a good place right now. Eating my mangos for breakfast.

I have found it helpful when i am off track to just focus on my next meal or walk. Sorry things are so chaotic in your world right now. Aging parents and all that goes with it is a major stressor, and i know you have other major life changes happening all at once. Be gentle with yourself, lean on friends for support (here and irl) and take things one at a time. Good luck!

We have our ups and downs....but that’s what make our lives interesting. I’ll be 62 in October and going through a divorce at this age is rough. But I’ve always tried to look at what is good in my life and what I can control, which is only myself. I look forward to whatever may come, I’ve always been independent that way. I love your strength, you seem to be going in the right direction, so don’t worry about the detours, you can always find your way back to the main road. Im on a mission to feel good about myself, and you ladies are great support. Hang in there ....we can do this!

I recommend a supplement called cholera. it's a kind of algae in either pill form or powder form. it saved my constipation problems and I feel a lot less bloated. my doctor recommended it. if you are interested in the supplement I'll tell you where to get it.

It's great you're back! hanging out with friends or co workers and sharing is fun. You have to find a healthier way to do it.

Food and friends and family stressors (yep, I have them too-big time) are so hard. I finally came up with a mantra. I HAVE CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION TO YOUR ISSUES. That does not mean I don’t care, but I don’t feel the need to let myself get my tinsel in a tangle over everything that happens in other people’s lives. One thing about walking a lot or hiking— shoes make all the difference in the world. Our usual tennis shoes will not cut it if you are pounding pavement when you walk. You need actual shoes made for WALKING not running. I you are hiking your property, you need hiking shoes with good ankle support. I use to think a shoe was a shoe— totally not so. Thus you get heel pain and calf pain. Whatever problems we have in life are certainly compounded by alcohol. I found Coors non— alcoholic and I love it,but you will never find it in any kind of restaurant. There was a thread a few days ago about friendships. It’s very hard to be part of a group when the primary focus is “let’s do lunch, or dinner or after work drinks.”. I haven’t found an answer except to keep doing what I do.

Cut yourself some slack, or give yourself some grace, just like you do for other people. You are not defined by your ups and downs...but your body is telling you what it wants and needs. We turn to food for comfort, but its like a "pimp" and destroys our physical and mental health. Have you read "Wheat Belly?" Wheat has an addictive hold on our brains and our body has to overcome! Most drinks have a wheat / rye / barley base, so they don't help. Temporary setbacks can be overcome...the body is fearfully and wonderfully made - listen to it! What has helped our ancestors and even wild animals survive? That which is found in nature without all the additives. You can live like a "modern American", or you can actually LIVE by eating what your body (not your brain) tells you that you need. Hang in there!

It's the long game that counts! There's going to be ups and downs, we're all human, if we were machines life may be easier but it wouldn't be as interesting!

Jump back on the the best of your ability - we ALL go off from time to time. The key is to stop in now and avoid going out of control on the long term

So sorry you are feeling a bit under. No doubt you will find what works for you, whether it is a mix of veggies/carnivore or complete veganism. A bit of socializing is good for mental well being. Not necessarily with lots of spirits :)

Thank you everyone! I've just spent my day cleaning and drinking water. Now I'm getting excited about cooking dinner. My goal is whole foods...little oil... No salt. And maybe a coke zero with cherry bourbon later while I put my feet up and relax. I forgot to mention I worked 15 hours overtime the last two weeks, so I'm taking a break this weekend and opted out of working Saturday. I truely do need to find a balance. I am 100% sure I need to cut salt and fat. I need to cut meat and dairy. And I need to enjoy my new friendships. And I've decided I'm still building my house.
