Abba. Usually less than 20% of bees are male (drones). The drones eat honey and mate with the Queen, but the Queen only mates with 20 or so and that does her for a lifetime. BN of it seems like a deal for the drones, only twenty mate out of a population of 10k drones, ,(in a 50k hive). The Lucky winners... die. The other drones, come winter, are dragged to the door and booted out to starve and/or freeze to death. They provide nothing to the hive at that point so they are useless consumers of honey which is required to feed the girls over the winter, and the Queen of course.

Rocker. Everything they produce this year, since they are a new hive, will be needed to feed them over the winter. Some time next year they will provide me with some extra honey, but I have to be sure to leave them enough. I want then more for pollinating my raspberries and to learn from them. Speaking of raspberries, I are the sole red one or there today. First of the season. Way more to come.

Lucky you. Fresh honey on the way. Keep us up to date on your education and educate us. I have the bee keeping for dummies book but he never did anything so it's added to my "dummies" library.
