Sheila823's Journal, 31 July 2012

I'm baffled... I'm following the rules buy not losing weight. Maybe I've cut back on my caloric intake too much. I read somewhere if you do that, you're body goes into starvation mode. Literally keeping the fat because it doesn't know when the next meal is coming. I'm scared to eat more, but need to do something. I cut back to 1200 cals/day. I guess I should bump up to 1500 cals/day. I'm disappointed....

Hi Sheila, I'm sorry your feeling disappointed. It might help to re-read the Atkins book again. I've noticed a few things in your food log that aren't Atkins approved. Even little cheats will kick you out of Ketosis and may take several days to get back in. Try going back to a strict induction diet for 2 weeks-stay under 20 NC with 10-15 coming from veggies, and you WILL see results. (No cheating-give away those chips Ahoy to your neighbors or co-workers!) :)

First off, what were your weight loss expectations? You were dieting prior to going on Atkins, so much of the excess water weight that's dropped in the early stages of a diet may have already been lost. From your weight history, I see a 4- to 4.4-pound loss in just the last week! Yes, your calories are probably too low and that could come back to bite you at some point, but the other issue is that your menus don't look like Induction. Take some time to go back and review the book or go back over the tutorials on the Atkins site and I think you'll see some areas for improvement. On the other hand.....what you're currently doing IS allowing you to lose weight, so you may want to continue that as your own kind of diet/WOE. Good luck.

Based on your food diary, you are not doing Atkins induction. Try 20 net carbs. Google 'starvation mode', it's not what we are led to believe it is. Once I figured this out and dropped my calories, I started losing again. Best of luck to you!!

Hi there - 1200 calories is a little low, but if you're doing Atkins, the cheeseburger and chips ahoy are not on the atkins program - the burger, cheese, lettuce, etc - without the bun, yes! but cookies?? No...you need to be between 20 and 25 carbs while you're on induction with the bulk of those being from the veggies on the induction allowed list. you're at 73 grams of carbs after one meal and a snack - that's 3 days total allowance. If you really need the bread, there's some good 3 carb tortillas on the market - I got mine at Walmart - that would make a good wrap. Hang in there, and don't give up! Just remember, bread, sugars, and definately cookies, at least while on induction, are a no-no! Good luck! :)

Well, the true Atkinites have commented above :) I'm not strictly on an Atkins diet, but close - I've actually dropped down to 900-1k calories a day myself, after probably having run 3k-4k calories a day before I started dieting. But I'm keeping to 10 carbs or less a day, mostly around 5 a day, and lots of fat, so I'm basically never hungry. The first few days, I dropped like a rock, but wasn't tracking my intake, so I don't really know how many calories I was eating. I also started wondering the same things you did when I started to plateau, but took a chance and decided to go down instead of up, and it seems to be working.
