gwmATL's Journal, 23 July 2016

I actually weigh 259.2 lbs. today. That's sort of the problem..I lie to myself about my weight. i tell myself I have a big frame and that it's ok to eat a lot. I joined this site today because I need accountability.. a system to help tell the truth daily and share it with others. I have a few friends that support me, but most of my friends are just looking for eating partners or someone to drink with, to indulge in their behavior. There's this back-and-forth illusion that it's all OK because everyone is doing it...so why not?... Well, that behavior has to stop, or at least be observed, contained and controlled. I used to be an athlete, so... what happened??.. Well it was a LOT of family tragedy that I won't go into... but food became the drug of choice for me... I could fill in all the cracks in my depression with the soft feel-good putty of food. It's time to change.

You will also find that there are a lot of people here who are supporting each other through healing - healing life's tumbling and fumbling and the need for more accountability and truth. Welcome!

It's doubly difficult when friends and family encourage indulgence. Change is hard, but not impossible, building good habits to replace the bad ones takes consistency, lots of support and good tools to help you along the way here.

A good place to start is by logging everything you eat/drink so you can see exactly where you may need to do some work. And I found just reading everyone's postings gave me lots of tips and good ideas. Then you can pick and choose what you think will work for you!

GwmATL I think what you will find is that you are over eating to get that endorphin rush you used to get from exercise. I think you will find that as soon as you change your choice of endorphins from unhealthy to healthy your weight will adjust. It takes about 2 weeks to for your body to say "hey I remember this feeling" and about 6 weeks before you body will actually choose exercise over binging. The key however is to not over do it in the gym, I'm still recovering from having my achilles tendon surgically repaired. I was doing so good - and started working out like I did 20 years ago. Bad idea, I went back up to 255.

It's hard to do it alone. We might not know each other in RL, but it means a lot to have the support.

Welcome. One day at a time. To start, I would try portion control. It's a simple change to make, but will really help.
