Well, a remarkable new study from Brian Clark at Ohio University shows that sitting still, while just thinking about exercise, might make us stronger. Clark and colleagues recruited 29 volunteers and wrapped their wrists in surgical casts for an entire month. During this month, half of the volunteers thought about exercising their immobilized wrists. For 11 minutes a day, 5 days a week, they sat completely still and focused their entire mental effort on pretending to flex their muscles. When the casts were removed, the volunteers that did mental exercises had wrist muscles that were two times stronger than those that had done nothing at all.

FINALLY! An exercise I can actually do, except maybe the focusing for 11 minutes part, but other than that, an exercise I can do! Actually, I probably could do this while driving. Man, I'm gonna be ripped by the end of summer. Sweet.

Not sure about the accuracy of that study. You can flex your muscles in a cast. You can tighten them and relax them. They had me doing that in my leg brace after surgery. I was in a leg brace. Did they have any sensors on the muscles to see if while they were thinking about exercising them if they were actually tightening and releasing them?

I was just telling my husband the same thing. Women know you can flex all kinds of muscles without actually moving. Like kageling (I know I spelled that wrong. Went with phonetics).

I often sit with my stomach sucked in or my calves raised to improve the musculature...hmmmm...maybe I am on to something???

HCB Should we put a cast over your abdomen and take measurements in a couple to weeks to see if it worked? = )

Ha...if only! Can you imagine, IC, all those heavy coin bags you carry, you should never have to worry about fat or flab!

yes maybe a cast can work if tied around the abdomen . In some places women wrap a tight cast around the abdomen post delivery for 40 days . They say that fat will not accumulate in the abdominal area and also the cravings will be less

So funny! about the abdominal cast! I just remembered physical therapy having me tighten muscles. I was non weight bearing for 9 months and had an ankle to upper thigh immobile brace. I could only have brace off at physical therapy once I hit the 4 or 5 month mark. They started with a cast but it was soo dang heavy. They were trying to save any muscle strength I could.
