Diea's Journal, 18 March 2018

I just started my first job out of grad school on Friday. Yay!!! But... I am very suddenly changing my schedule, and I learned I have to be very flexible about my eating schedule. I also learned that I cannot wear heels at this job. My feet were killing me after 8 hours of going up and down floors. OMG. It's Sunday, and I still feel kinda tired!

On Friday / Saturday, I decided to relax and went a bit over calories, i.e., with social affairs, liquor, cake, etc. I hope this isn't a recurring issue. Maybe it's just a strong recovery from a tiring first-day? :( Or is this just how weekends are with a salary job? I just don't know. I've always had non-exempt positions until now.

Besides the weekend, I did so good with calories. Things went haywire when I left the office. I didn't get any pounds lost despite all of my low-calorie days. I mean, a 0.5 weight gain? Oh no. Not cool. I'm thinking weighing in during the weekend isn't a good idea. I've decided to move my weekly weigh-in to Fridays. Perhaps seeing the weight loss before weekends / recovery-time will help motivate me.

Does anyone have any tips for getting used to an earlier schedule that is all of a sudden incredibly tiring?

Your going to have to take time to adjust your sleep and social time to acclimate to an earlier work schedule, or perhaps an even longer day since your now a salaried employee. Make certain the company doesn't take complete advantage of you as well. As for acclimating to new work environment or situation---as bad as it may sound, go to bed earlier, be refreshed in the mornings--plan social time throughout the work week accordingly, even if you have to inform your friends, take time for you to eat healthy, to achieve your goals, and fulfill your lifestyle choices. No one is perfect, we all fall into temptations, old habits, or bad ones at times. But good planning, makes for good results. Wishing you well on your life adventure. Congratulations on your new job !!!

Congrats on you job that's awesome! It will take time getting into the pace of things but your a bright young girl you'll get it. As for the diet preplan and premake for the week that will help. Very happy for you Sweetie!

Good advice all around. I think the best is go to bed earlier. With any new schedule it will take awhile to adjust. watch out for the snooze alarm. 😴😴 and get some cute comfortable shoes. Born are fabulous. Not cheap bu worth the price. 👣👣👍💖

You'll figure it out. I can say this: it takes work to form the right habits, to develop endurance, and it feels very painful. But once formed, it suddenly gets easy again. Start off by going to bed early, and get lots of sleep. Hang in there!

You can be proud you have a new job, you only gained slightly, that could be stress, make sure all meals are well planned, make sure you have everything you need for your meal, get some low calorie dessert like jello and cool whip or pudding and cool whip, weight watcher desserts etc. to reward and so you don't feel deprived. Best kind to your self and try to stay on track, I allow a range of 900 to 1200 calories try not to go over 900 to 1000 cal. that leaves 200 goof calories. Good Luck you can do this.

New jobs are tiring! LOL You’ve got great advice here. Plan your weeks’ meals on Sat and Sun and the Friday weigh in sounds like a great idea. LOL Boots are probably a good alternative for walking those stairs. Low, high, you can chose the style and still look stylish and professional. 🙋🏻I agree with the plan for a few hundred calories below where you end up. I know I will eat 3-500 calories at the end of my evening. So I try like hell not to eat more than 150 before noon. LOL It’s just what works for me. Adkin’s, think thin, and Power Crunch and a few other companies put out great tasting cheat bars that can give you a taste without being a huge hit. Or satisfy yourself with a protein smoothie with cocoa powder in it, or some nuts eaten slowly. 💁🏻‍♀️Put a picture of that sandy beach up on your fridge, plaster your cupboards with it! It should help! 🙋🏻

Set a regular weekday schedule so that you get at least 7 hours of sleep. Establish a firm routine of getting to bed by a regular time. Take 3 mg Melatonin 30 to 60 minutes ahead. Set your programmable thermostat so it cools down about bedtime, and warms up at wake up time.

Also: eat breakfast, preferably with protein. Congrats on the new job!

Yes, it is a big adjustment but you will figure it out. Definitely don't wear high heels at work..they are a torture device. If you have meetings or whatever that you want to wear heels to then keep your low heeled shoes at work for the rest of the day. Take stairs not elevators when you can and a walk at lunch helps with work stress as well as calorie burn. And I definitely agree with getting your sleep being key to your health. Congratulations on the new job!

Yep, you've got great advice here. The only thing I would add is to be careful of your sleeping pattern on the weekend. Don't go to bed too late and get up too late, as you'll unsettle your sleep cycle and create 'jet lag'. (I know it sucks). Working 9 to 5 is a lifestyle and if you want to be successful at it, you've got to create a good environment and plan and prepare. Accept that you won't have as much free time. if i may ask, what is a non-exempt position? Good luck, you're very smart, you'll figure it out!

Yes, go to sleep earlier! I cannot stress it enough about how crucial good sleep is for weight loss; and just life in general. Multiple studies have shown that people who manage their sleep and don’t sacrifice it are more likely to have healthy and easier weight loss. Also, if you feel like you’re dragging all day, you may want to look at your diet. It may be too low in calories or might be missing some key nutrients which naturally give the body the means to feel energized,(google “foods for energy”). Lastly, awake every morning with a purpose or a goal that you want to accomplish, and tell yourself 3 positive things! Good luck and have a blessed day!

Also young people need to remember this: If a younger person shows initiative, smarts and a great attitude, there are plenty of older more established professionals whole will see it and open doors. So, be successful in the small things and greater things will come.

First job out of school? It’s been a long time but there are going to be a lot of adjustments. Folks have already said that it’s important to keep your schedule everyday and that’s great advice. In a workplace, think about how to politely handle (and turn down) food that you don’t want to eat. It’s literally everywhere. You choose whether or not to disclose if you’re dieting or not. Take a walk during lunch if you have time. Wear sensible shoes all day and bring tennis shoes ( see recommendation above). That’s all that I can think of at the moment. I hope that it’s helpful.

Oh my goodness, you all are amazing!! Thank you for all the congratulatory comments!! These responses are so helpful. Love the focus on sleep, on prepping meals, planning social time with friends ahead of time, comfy flats, low-calorie desserts, being mindful of stress, keeping heels stored at the office, showing initiative and having a positive attitude, turning down food politely, walking during lunch. Wow. This is such a great list, FS community. Gracias! Merci! I do have some questions, though. 1) "Take 3 mg Melatonin 30 to 60 minutes ahead." What do you use this for, gz9gjg? 2) "awake every morning with a purpose or a goal that you want to accomplish, and tell yourself 3 positive things!" I feel like I already have such a long list of things to do because we just moved and have so many boxes. How do you do this without getting stressed out, the ceps?

Melatonin is a sleep aid. If you are having trouble regulating your sleep at night. Start small. I only take 1 mg. So you could even start with 1/2 mg just enough to edge you into sleep if your mind doesn’t turn off. Too much and it will make you want to nod off the next day. Your body naturally produces melatonin as you spend time in sunlight so most people don’t really need it if they stay away from computers and such around bedtime. LOL 🙋🏻

One last suggestion: keep your list short and easy to do. If you master everything that you want to accomplish, you’re doing great, if you still have rough edges you can always revise your list. Good luck!

Thank you for the explanations, smprowett and drshellking. This is helpful. 1) I don't think I need melatonin at all, then. My body loves to sleep, and I don't have an issue with that. 2) My to-do list is extensive right now, so perhaps it just isn't a good time for the advice given by the ceps. It's a great idea that I may be able to implement once the dust settles and we are moved in.
