mrsmole's Journal, 22 August 2014

I have a favor to ask my friends on here. Now that I'm doing Atkins, I'm finding MANY database entries here to be erroneous and in need of correction. After correcting 3 entries, the system locked me out because it thinks I'm being malicious. It said they would "check and get back to me".

Meanwhile, I cannot make any database corrections. If I need to make updates, are any of my buddies out there willing to make them on my behalf? I desperately want to count my carbs and net carbs accurately. I'm sitting here staring at a box of Almond Milk that was listed wrong here and I had to call a friend to ask if she would log on and correct it for me in the database. This is just stupid. It happened yesterday.

I wrote to the support people just now and begged them to clear the flag, and maybe they will get around to it. I have found that they are WONDERFULLY fast in responding when someone on here is a scammer, but not so great in other areas.

Just comment that you would be willing and I will call on you if I need something updated.

All you have to do is add the food to your food journal, click it, in the lower left click "edit", make a few quick changes that I will PM you, and hit save. I won't ask you to do more than one and I will be 100% sure that it's accurate. Then you can delete the food from your journal. There may be a less complicated way to do it, but this is how I do it.,

Thanks in advance to anyone will to help me until this gets cleared up.

I've made changes over time. I wonder if they might be typos made by the person who entered the info. Also found the manufacturer tweaks their ingredients which will affect the numbers. Give me a yell. I'll help until they block me:~)

If you are editing, please do not "correct" food data that is accurate to fudge for Atkins. Let the data show actual facts and do your fudging in Excel outside the FatSecret site. (I can even show you how.) For example, do not subtract fiber content from carbohydrate count, or list fiber as "other carbohydrate" to get it to show net carbs for your personal purposes. Fiber is an important component of one's diet, impacting digestive health and prostate cancer risk. Subtracting fiber distorts reality for your personal convenience and does everyone else a disservice.

You could also add items to your own foods or your own meals - and keep them private. That way no can change them and common items will be there unmolested when you need them.

Mrs. M - I'm happy to help but haven't been here a lot lately. Feel free to PM me though and if I'm on, I'm glad to help. FWIW, I've simply added some of my own Custom Foods. Some of the foods in the database aren't even available to edit (asparagus for example) so I've done my own custom entry based on nutritional data found elsewhere. Another member here has been seeing some inaccuracies in sodium counts on things she eats frequently.

@Pegleged - net carbs is already a feature here. What MrsMole is saying is that some of the existing entries are simply wrong. I've encountered this too with a few foods I eat. When I look at the nutritional data elsewhere on the web or on the food package for prepared foods, it doesn't match the data here in FS.

Pegleged, you COMPLETELY and utterly misunderstood my intention in my Journal request, and I cannot fathom how. I would NEVER fudge the numbers for Atkins! But when I'm sitting there reading the label on the side of Almond milk and it says 1g carb and 1g fiber and the existing database for that exact product reads 2g carbs and 1g fiber, then, YEAH, I want to change that so it's ACCURATE. What's wrong with that? Sudenly carbs matter to me, whereas before I didn't give a furry rat's fanny about carbs. I'm a little insulted that you would think I'd have so little integrity as to intentionally alter existing entries for my own selfish fudging with anything less than what the label actually says in real life. That's just bizarre and anyone who does that doesn't belong in this community. I'm really hoping that isn't what you were implying with your remark and that it's my turn to misunderstand.

Thanks to Vickie, and Buffy - great idea on the private foods and meals - didn't think of that!

Listen Jooz Peoples, I'm blonde but have also noticed the problem of the data being incorrect. However, I cannot fathom for the life of me how to correct it from all your comments above. Please give me blonde instructions.

I'll be happy to help you with as many entries as you need to correct. Just PM me and I'll do it for you :)

Pixipi, once you are actually looking at the food item itself, as in you've clicked on it, you look in the lower left area of the screen for a blue "edit" link. Additionally, you can do a Control + F and type the word EDIT to find the word on the page. Let me know if this helps.

I think Buffybear said it best and put your fatsecret name in brackets i.e., ABC Bread (C67241) and when you go to search it anything you see with your initials, you know it is correct because you inputted the information from the label you had in your hand.

I've found that it's better to use the raw ingredients because the info on the cooked ones tends to assume you added salt, sugar, or fats in the cooking.

I was getting into an edit competition with someone over that almond milk!! They kept changing it back to the old values. I've been using Silk's unsweetened almond milk, because for some reason it has the same calorie information as the blue diamond almond milk (in case it gets changed back on you!)

Mrsmole, done the Cont + F on both the "Foods" tab & "My Fatsecret"/"RDI" tab but nothing???
23 Aug 14 by member: Pixipi
I found the "edit". If an ingredient, say almond flour, only had the quantity as "serving", how do you change it to grams or cups or oz etc.?

I noticed that if you buy a product from a regular supermarket and then you buy the same product at Costco/BJ/SAMS Club, the label changes quite a bit. What gives?

Some foods here simply aren't editable. C67241 - does the serving size change as well? Or is it just the nutritional values for the exact same service size?

Always happy to help!
