trackin64's Journal, 24 March 2017

I'd like to make a comment about all the food photos lately. As overweight people we are often food obsessed, then in order to lose weight we need to remain food oriented as we pay mind to our particular weight-loss programs. So we dutifully post our meals at our diet website and share our struggles and successes with others, provide support where we can and what do we see when we look at other peoples' posts? Pictures of FOOD, some of which is not necessarily a "bad" food, but is a trigger food for certain individuals. These people do not want to think about it, have banned it from their homes, and certainly do not want to be reminded about it by seeing it on their diet site. After all, don't we see enough pictures of food on tv, billboards and magazines? Some of us eating LCHF might post a pic of a juicy steak and offend the vegetarians or low-fat dieters - and vegetarians might deem this actually cruel. I'd much rather see pics of people's families, pets, hobbies or vacation shots, and I especially enjoy seeing people's transformations and great cartoons or other motivational images. We need to get the focus off food at least some of the time, and realize there's a whole other big world out there. Thank you for "listening" and I don't mean to chastise anyone posting food pics. I'm just hoping to raise consciousness on this matter.

It's good to express how you feel about looking at all the food pics. I suppose for some, it could be a "trigger". I think that FatSecret has changed their layout so that you see "featured" food pics rather than what we are used to seeing. That is why it looks like there are so many of food pictures. You can filter out what you see. I change that when I log in every day now to "my buddies only" posts now. I like seeing new recipes that my buddies come up with. I am always looking for new ideas. Maybe I am food obsessed. I like watching cooking shows, too. LOL! I do see what you mean. It just doesn't offend me to see what other people are eating (especially if they eat like I do - low carb). It only makes me more curious about that person and the efforts they are making to eat healthier. (hopefully). It motivates me to try different things, sometimes.

I'm on the fence about the food pics. The ones that fit my eating pattern don't bother me, because, as you point out, they don't trigger those cravings. But when I see stuff that I should not have (fried foods, high carb foods, etc) it makes me a little crazy, because it plants a seed... Just gotta learn to power through, I guess. But I totally get where you're coming from.

Here is why I post photos of food: Some people on this site are attempting to switch to vegan or whole-food, plant-based diets. My photos aren't perfect illustrations, but when you initially make that switch it is sometimes difficult to come up with good ideas for healthy meals. I post photos not just for my own accountability but to share meal ideas for those interested in pursuing vegan diets. I think tag the food in my food diary to the photo so that people who are interested can see how to make the meal. I do fast on Fridays, so I get that photos of food can be tempting. But, let's be real: seeing photos of food isn't what makes people fat. You can chose to eat the food and possibly suffer consequences or you can chose to refrain from eating a food that might not be healthy. You have to eat food to subsist. Food isn't the enemy. Rather, it's lack of self-control.

I don't get why some food is offensive to people who don't follow such diet? It seems to me the word "offensive" is being thrown around too much. Not everything is to be taken so personally :P

By think, I meant "then." I have uncooperative fingers this morning.

I agree Nastasia. Post all the juicy steaks and pork rinds ya want. I'm still picturing myself finally getting into a bikini (after a tummy tuck, of course...ha!)

But I guess I should add that the only thing I don't understand are pictures of food like chips, Coca-Cola, chocolate. We are all here to lose weight so I'm like "wtf?" when I see that, but whatever, it's still their choice to eat it and post it. I do understand your point, I just think people in general should not get so offended by everything!

You got that right, 2ManyCurves haha! :D

I'm annoyed by the food pics mainly because that's all that's in my feed anymore; and they seem to be the same 6 pics showing up. That's boring. I also would rather see humor, progress pics, or actually read your thoughts.

I also don't understand the pics of chocolate and stuff like that without any explanation. If you're posting a healthy or lowcal option that you want to share, I get it, but a picture of a calorie- and preservative-laden granola bar? Not so much. But again, to each his own.

Interesting comments - thank you to everyone for sharing your viewpoint!

I concur. Most of the pics are of foods that I find to be unhealthy though the person posting them might think they are eating "healthy" and sometimes I wonder if the pics don't trigger some people with food issues. Yes, food is everywhere in our environment. Humans (and all animals) are not meant to resist food because for eons it was a scarce commodity. Now it takes Superhuman strength to resist the constant bombardment of it everywhere. Thanks for posting and speaking out. I appreciate it.

It is interesting to see what healthy options people are eating, but, it does make one think about the next meal or snack rather than focusing on physical activity or other non-food diversion, so I agree with Trackin64. As a pescatarian, I don't want to see pictures of the meats people are eating.

After posting a food pic today, I find both sides of this discussion interesting. While I haven't seen soda or candy pics, I realize that not everyone may be losing weight on this app. They may be 'gainers' and if it fits their macros...in the belly it goes. Or perhaps they have a history of disordered eating a and they avoid candy and now is the first time they can enjoy it without guilt. Or maybe they're trolling. Who knows? I know I've eaten a burger (or several) since starting this journey in January and losing 20+ lbs. Yet, I wouldn't post burger pics because I'd rather keep track of 'cleaner' meals that I can easily reproduce. As to posts from others, if I'm not interested, I scroll on past.
