Hermiones Mom's Journal, 21 February 2017

Well I thought I was back, but I had a horrible sinus infection, and just as it cleared up on Sunday, I got really really sick -- terrible abdominal pain, nausea, chills. I knew what it was. I called my sister-by-choice, Charo, to come from Joliet, and she called my goddaughter who got here first and helped me pack and do a few things that needed doing tobefore I went to the hospital. It took them 3 hours to see me and another 4 to get the CT results, and no surprise... more kidney stones. I thought I was compensating for the oxalate in my diet with plenty of citrate, but apparently not. I have to cut back on the oxalate in my diet... less buckwheat, more water... So I just have to work harder.

I had a kidney stone once. It's one of the most painful things I ca think of. Sounds like you have been through this before. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Hope things resolve quickly for you. Kathryn

Wow...you have been going through a rough patch! If you're cutting back on the oxalates, ditch all the nightshade plants...tomato, potato, eggplant, etc. My ex was prone to kidney stones, and cutting out nightshades really helped.

That's no fun - I hope you make a speedy recovery! I was surprised about buckwheat so was motivated to look up food with oxalates. I was surprised by the fact that almonds, chocolate, tea and coffee are high in them.

Oh I FEEEELLLL you, I mean it, I am "passing" a stone currently and I am not having anywhere near as much trouble as you did, but I'm scared it could change at any moment. I hope you feel better soon.

Over a 4 year period, I've passed 5 kidney stones and still have about the same in my kidneys waiting their turn. I've learned how to deal with it. Mainly by drinking a lot more water, and taking chinese Niu Xi herb 5/1 extract powder. It relaxes the ureter, which is, as you know, where the pain comes from. I don't worry about oxalates, even though my stones are calcium oxalate (had one tested). Drinking small amounts of water often, is the best thing to do. Having passed so many I know the subtle symptoms: lower back subtle pain, or, as you know, radiated pain anywhere in the abdomen, groin or back. I take the Niu Xi immediately in hot water, and repeat later as needed, when feeling subtle pain again, which I've come to recognize for what it is. I passed this last stone 4.5mm x 7mm with no more pain than that mild subtle pain. (Note on pain: I've found that focussing on the pain, no matter what kind, kidney or not, is a good way to turn the pain DOWN. It's a signal something's wrong, and when we pull away from it, the natural thing to do, then the volume gets turned UP. Focussing on it consciously, with curiosity, and no apprehension, turns it way down the more we focus on it. Also, when doing that, it's much easier to see exactly where it's coming from.)

H-Mom -- are you in the hospital right now? I am glad you had someone to help get you to the hospital. I know how much you loved your buckwheat pancakes. You'll have to find a new pancake recipe. Bless your heart. I don't know what to say except I am here if you need to chat. The pain is bad, I know. (((Big Hugs!)))

Sorry not to acknowledge all the helpful and encouraging comments. I was really overwhelmed last week. The combination of the sinus infection and the kidney stone just felt like I'd been hit by a truck. I could hardly move for days. I've bounced back a little now, but of course now I have a ton of work to do because I lost so much time. But I'm trying to pull it together. Mom2Boxers -- I will continue to eat my buckwheat pancakes -- in fact, this is a pancake weekend coming up. But I will be more careful about how many buckwheat products I eat in a given day and I will make sure to up my drinking water. Thanks again everyone...
