That’s awesome! I also have knee/ankle/hip issues at times. I say just go as low as you can while keeping proper alignment to protect your knees. I am all about modification when it’s needed. I also space out certain types of exercises so that I don’t get injured. Keep up the good work!

I do that too. Spacing out what machines I use. I do something that bothers me, I move on to something totally different. The knees going to eventually need surgery. The ankle, being heavy and clumsy has done a number on it. Hip actually pops out of place, sometimes at the most interesting times. Hip abduction, leg curls, and leg press are very bad sometimes on hip and knee. The knee makes the stair stepper impossible. Left shoulder has impingment, told with time, and therapy the shoulder may fix itself, if not surgery. So doing a squat with 20 pounds was a huge win for me. Even if it was a half squat lol. I have inner ear problems, which has caused me to b very clumsy all my life, and throw my weight and being a nurses aid, and home health care aide, lots of wear on the body.

With my knee injury, PT doc said to do them with your back against a wall. It takes the pressure off the knee.

Hi Tweetledee, Yes. Its perfectly safe to squat. NOBODY has perfect squat form when they first start. Going to full depth is something that will come in time. You mentioned that you already have a bum knee, ankle and hip. The only way those will get better is if you get stronger. Everyone starts somewhere :) Check out Alan Thrall's squat tutorial for some guidance. https://youtu.be/vmNPOjaGrVE

BIKES BIKES BIKES, I blew out my knee - ACL LCL and meniscus- I had crazy instablity and pain after the surgery for several years. I started riding my bike. It was the only thing that helped build strength without the issues that I was getting with the other exercises. Indoor spin bikes, road biking, even casual cruiser biking. It all helped. I am not afraid of my knees like I used to be, and I feel SO much better. Like HuFlungFoo said you HAVE to build strength to support those joints. Once I did that I got my life back.

I have crapola knees too. My stationary bike is my best friend. I'm afraid to squat (but my glutes need it).

A modified squat is to sit onto a table or high chair. Sit stand sit stand etc.
