jmb3450's Journal, 31 March 2015

Just an FYI thing for anyone interested: I watched a brief news clip today about fasting and how while it's still not a mainstream thing, it's getting more and more recognition for the health benefits. The two main benefits mentioned were (One) increased fat burning during the latter part of the fast and (Two) stimulates the body to increase production of growth/regeneration hormones. All stuff I'd already read or heard about but still nice to hear confirmation of it on mainstream news. 16:8 was specifically mentioned, that was the minimal recommended fasting period. Going longer to 24 hours with a fast resulted in very significant increased production of growth hormones. The guy who presented it does a 24 hour fast once a week.

Thanks, Jim. I believe most people can do the 16:8 fast, unless they are diabetic or have a health problem. The 24 hour fast seems extreme, although people in ancient time did go hungry a lot.

I wonder if the 24 hour fast is for people 18-50 years old. I read that researchers say Atkins is too stressful for middle age people. Maybe 24 hours fasting would be too stressful for them.

Deb, that's interesting stuff to research, when I have some time I'll do some digging. I'm also going to increase my fasts out to 18 or 20 hours a couple times a week. Might help give the jump start I seem to be needing.

haha!:) My diet is becoming a fast! around 750 Calories yesterday! But really, If it works, why not? We Christian's do it For God in Prayer. I heard that many people get very close to God, and their Spiritual life really changes for the Good!~ Blessings~Ann

Good to know, I have thought about trying it but I do enjoy eating.

Doing a fast would be likely be quite a struggle unless your body is keto-adapted, which essentially means training your body to use body fat for fuel instead of glucose. Not sure if you're following a low carb/ketogenic diet, but I would definitely look into it if you are not. I've found that following keto has completely done away with cravings and I can naturally go many hours without food and still have a clear head and great energy. I've always been a slave to sugar and this has been my miracle cure! You naturally eat less because you are actually satiated from eating the right kinds of foods in the right ratios. Here's a link to a podcast on Jimmy Moore's blog about the topic of intermittent fasting: http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/the-llvlc-show-episode-596-intermittent-fasting-specialist-brad-pilon-makes-the-case-for-if/14876 Hopefully that gives you some extra insight. Good luck! :)

The fasting isn't the problem, it is gaining that weight back and the eventual yo-yoing that gets you fatter in the end. I have done a few prolonged juicing (vegetables) fasts but stopped. I think its great for a day or a few days, but I know a friend now who is still doing it and she gets bigger and bigger after every fast.

it does wonders for all aspects of your physical health. not just the dietary portion.

Wow that is good to know! I might have to try it! Seems to be working for you!

Yes - I agree with PL1216 - Keto seems ot help me with IF because the fat satiates for longer. Sometimes I just am so not hungry...like today!

It might be really good for some people but I always end up sick after I fast... I wish I didn't but I do.

I have great results with the 16:8 and plan to re-start it ASAP. Unfortunately, my schedule is not cooperating these days.

Am wondering what you eat once it's time? Protein and veggies? Whatever you want? 1 meal or more within the 8 hour window? Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input. To clarify any confusion, the type of fasting referred to in the newscast was short term, 16 to 24 hours, not going without eating for days. Bill, I'm going to work on extending my fasting times on days I'm doing that out to 18-20 hours and see how that goes. Finished eating last night around 6 so shouldn't be too bad waiting until noon or 2pm to eat today.
