Josie Ann's Journal, 19 August 2014

I'm going to see how high the day counter on the "Weigh In Now" ticker will go! It's currently sitting at 89 days and I feel no impulse to change it. Truly, I have not weighed myself in close to 3 months and I'm good with that. Like a good FS buddy (Bella) said the other day (bit of paraphrasing) "those last 5lbs won't make you happy or happier." So very true.

It's been a long time since I recorded a journal and it was intentional. I've become a Vegan and I wanted to see how this lifestyle worked for me before I said it on here to make sure it just wasn't a passing fancy, as I was a happy meat-eater and have been my whole life.

Why have I become Vegan? Because, one day I was craving a banana, but my diet mind said you can't eat a banana - too many carbs and sugar. But, intuitively, that didn't sit well, because it's a natural whole food - c'mon! So, naturally, I Googled it and I did a lot of research (and still do most days), and came across eating a plant-based diet. The more I read , the more it resonated with me. So, I started that day and my initial impetus was to get off restricting food and to be proactive in my health. I now eat as much as I want of fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, pasta. All high-quality carbs and naturally low in fat stuff (don't add oils or creams to my food). My first instinct was "no, you can't eat all those carbs!", but I did and my weight has been steady. (I've probably lost a bit in fact judging by my clothes). This way of eating works for me. I'm amazingly regular (like Sheldon regular), my skin has improved and just all-around feel great and energetic. The proof is always in the banana pudding!

As I may have started out being a dietary vegan, I now can't eat meat for ethical reasons too. I honestly never knew (because I didn't want to know) how cows, pigs, and chickens were treated in these damn slaughterhouses. It is beyond horrific how these animals suffer and for me, now that I know I just can't. Not to mention how the Big Food meat companies actually handle and process the meat is just plain disgusting.

We have to take control of our health and be responsible for its condition. Because the government sure as hell doesn't give a shit.

A lot has changed food-wise, but the main thing is for the first time in my life I'm discovering a freedom from food. I don't fret mealtimes anymore and I'm certainly done with counting stupid calories. I eat a whole foods plant-based diet and my weight is taking care of itself. I still exercise regularly not to burn off unwanted calories , but because I want to (I've gotten into cycling this summer!).

There is so much information on the benefits of eating a plant-based diet, so if you are intrigued go Google and try it out. What have you got to lose.

I do recommend watching a documentary called "Forks over Knives". You can watch it on Netflix.

Have a good day everyone...eat your fruits and veggies today!

It's so true, isn't it? We think 'ohhhh... noooo... carbs... no... ' because for months the body will respond to that... and then... it still responds. Probably the 'all things in moderation'.. I don't know. Any other of a 1000 websites will say 'no' to the banana and I've began reacting, physiologically, to that with the same racing heart as imagining eating a subway sandwich (the bread... oh no .. the bread) and the reality, the thing to remember is it's quantity and nutrition. Have you seen the yobana thing? I keep thinking about getting one. Will probably need to take a valium before eating a banana but you've got me thinking it's time to shake things up here.

LOL....my ticker sits at 281days. I barely notice it anymore. Although I am not a vegan (yet) I do believe we are designed to eat that way. I eat as much ripe organic seet fruit til lunch time and I feel awesome with it :)

Bells: yes, all carbs are not created equal! It's just ridiculous that the diet industry has made us "afraid" to eat a freakin' banana, when it is so healthy for us. Our body (including the brain) runs on glucose and there is a reason we have a "sweet tooth". All I can say is that eating this way has made me let go of worrying of gaining weight. I eat plant foods when I'm hungry and I stop when I'm full. It's really a matter of what types of calories we're putting in to get the most of out of our bodies for optimal health and energy. I've never heard of Yobana, but I'll look it up later today.

schmetterling34: Good to know the Weigh in Now ticker won't stop at 100 - NOT REALLY! I wish I could turn that stupid thing off for good. I too agree that our bodies were designed to eat plants. But, the human body is incredibly adaptable, so we ate meat when plants were scarce to survive. Food is abundant in the western world and so is meat and other processed junk food, and coincidentally we have some major health issues wherever the standard American diet is consumed. That's what I do too: eat raw till lunch. Thanks for commenting!

I loved Forks Over Knives, and I love, love, LOVE my whole-food, plant-based diet! It has been a lifesaver... literally! I was in exactly the same boat as Joe Cross in "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead", with the same health problems he had! The power of veggies is astounding! Two years ago, I was obese and really ill and now, with the help of fruits and veggies, my entire life has been transformed! I can eat a MOUNTAIN of veggies, and I'm never hungry! The extra weight just fell off and I eat TONS of carbs!

Sweet2th: Hooray for you! That is so good that you took matters into your own hands and healed your body. It really is amazing how much better we feel and how it's easier to be happy when you feed your body the correct foods. It's such a shame that the word "carbs" has gotten such a bad rap; thanks to the diet industry over these past 20 yrs. Thanks for the support and keep up the fruiting!

I was going to buy bananas last night but forgot after picking up apples... and I live to banana another day :-) Yeah, we have to stop worrying so much about 'what' instead of 'how much'. Or at least.. I do.
