HCB's Journal, 02 July 2012

In June, I experimented with food plan changes that didnt work as well for me. I went back to my higher fiber, fruits and veggies (carbs), drinking tons of water and daily exercise. I had a satisfying drop this week - so NOW we know what best works for my body!

Good for you! You were testing out low-carb, right? And that wasn't working? I don't want to do low-carb because it frankly bothers me: both the idea of not being able to have at least SOME carbs, and the idea of increasing so much fat in my system. How can a diet with limited fruit be all that good for me, I think? (-: Anyway, so it sounds like you and I are on approximately the same eating plan now: high fiber, fruits and veggies. I also eat lean protein at almost every meal (breakfast is egg/cottage cheese/greek yogurt; lunch is tuna/turkey/protein powder; dinner is chicken/beef/salmon/pork chop/shrimp). I'm going to snoop through your food journal (hope that's OK) to get some ideas for more foods -- hope that's OK. (-: I'm cheering for you!!

I can't handle low carb either. I don't see it as the perfect fix-all diet like some do. If you find a combination that works, and provides you with adequate nutrients & protein, and enough calories...eat it!

How low is low carb? No carb? I was trying to not eat any carb and that really backfired with binging. I now allow myself two carbs a day, low calorie breads, cheerios, graham crackers, or brown rice. I just heard that it's the sugar in carbs that's a problem and all along I was thinking it was the wheat or flour. So confusing. A little bit of carbs the way I have been eating them is giving me the fuel I need to exercise and not feel starved or deprived. Any other carb suggestions?

there's a big difference between healthy carbs & refined carbs. carbs give energy, protein makes you feel full. healthy carbs include whole food like fruit n veg. just stay away from the refined carbs, and it'll be all good!

YES! dangerr is correct and I try to avoid refined white anything - I do eat Kashi cereal and an all corn tortilla at breakfast but gave up breads, starches (rice, potato, pasta, etc.) or crackers, because they bloat me and push me to crave more of it. I eat fruits and veggies for my carbs and lean protein, and some dairy. The soluble carbs (fiber grams) can be substracted from your total carb grams each day to give you your overall count.

My Dr. told me a low carb diet but it didn't work for me either. I find that when I stick to things like fresh fruits and veggies I do real well. Good job on figuring out what works the best for you. I am a firm believer we have to all figure out what works the best and stick to it because there is not a one size fits all plan.

I have reached a point where the consumption of any substantial amount in refined carbs makes me sleepy. That drogginess is an undesired effect for me. I ditto the decision to abstain from crackers, pasta, potatoes, rice, and such because these foods make me HUNGRY! Keep up the great work toward discovering what is best! You are doing GREAT!

That is the same diet I am on in this journey, I try to cut out as much processed food as possible and it is working GREAT! I feel full most of the time and a lot of days I have to eat more just to reach cal goal to keep me normal. Did the low carb thing years ago and could not make it work for a long time. After a lot of reading I came to find out that all those 'fake' low carb items out there just make your body want more. The only issue I have run into and solved on this diet is fiber. I eat nuts or dried fruit to keep my fiber up. Other than that, eat fresh everything if possible. It is hard when you go with firends and you can't order that huge plate of food they do, but if you watch they show the signs very soon after eating it while your still full of energy.
