DairyKing's Journal, 23 June 2012

Up at six this morning, on schedule, and out the door for my weekend run. Did 5.0 miles. It was fairly tough. Mother Nature reared her ugly head and the graph shows a dip in time where I ducked into the woods and entertained the wildlife. All in all, I suppose it wasn't that bad; still managed to pull off a 12:45 pace.

I expected to leave at 9:00 this morning to get the lumber and landscape fabric, but DW decided to get up and make me breakfast. That doesn't happen very often, so I didn't turn it down. I enjoy a good old fashioned eggs and bacon breakfast occassionally. Got out of here at about 9:15, got what I needed, and even bought about 60 bags of the rubber nuggets from recycled tires. I was going to order 4 tons via the internet, but there was a $500.00 delivery charge and my tractor wasn't capable of taking the 2000 lb pallets off the truck anyway, so I elected to use my own trailer, and just buy about 250 of the bags from the local home improvement stores. So, today I picked up 60 bags, and that's just enough to get me started. Won't need them for another week anyway. The ground is prepared and I'm ready to start the assembly of the playground set.

Some assembly required!

Ughhh! Lots of pieces and hardware.

As you can see, I have no shortage of neighbors and their kids dropping by to see what's going on - and play in the dirt. So far though, only the kids play in the dirt. :)

Once I tore open the boxes and saw all the pieces and the hardware, I knew this wasn't going to be a one day job. The labeling on the wood is smudged or faded on a lot of the pieces, and I have to be very careful which washers and bolts I use, or I could get almost done with the thing and find the bolts I have left are too short or something. It was 7 O'Clock already and I was beat. I'm thinking maybe it will be done by sometime next weekend.

Well, goodnite all. Pleasant dreams.

Yessss.. wildlife entertainment on your run... I miss that.. (kind of) :) WOW - that playground set looks intense!!! And you're right, you definitely need to be careful so that you aren't left with the wrong hardware at the end! Ugh.. Hope it doesn't drive you crazy!!

Wow, DK. Do you have any helpers? . Maybe Buffy's stepson is available. Seriously, it looks like quite a job. nice that you had a special breakfast yesterday. I'm guessing you're quite an appreciated husband. GREAT job on the run. You have a very full life.

Cool pictures! That dirt pile looks like the ones where we played "King of the Hill" when we were kids. The project reminds me of those "we'll knock this out in a few hours on Saturday" projects of my husband's. We have a large batting cage in our back yard where my husban gives baseball hitting lessons. Concrete, artificial turf, metal poles, welding, netting, rubber mats, & ties defined the EXPENSE. here's wishing you continued success! Happy Sunday!

Sounds like a great, active day. Are you feeling much more energetic to tackle projects? I am, thanks to the weight loss so far. By the time I hit my goal, I'll be flying!!!

Heidijoy: Losing weight certainly did give me more energy, but even now, it catches up with me, and I just have to say, "Enough is enough," and rest. Actually, it isn't 'me' saying it at all (I'm not that smart), my body just doesn't hear the alarm, if I overdo it. :( What I really look forward to is the ability to run a 5K about 10 minutes faster if I lose all the weight I plan on losing.

Wow DK what an huge project - looking forward to seeing the pics when you are done :) What do you use the rubber nuggets for??
25 Jun 12 by member: triaby
Triaby, they are basically for fall protection. They reduce the risk of serious injuries by about 400% as compared to just wood mulch, sand, grass or dirt. When I was younger, swingsets were installed in dirt, asphalt or concrete, and I guess we had our share of injuries. I figure it's my duty to help them make it to at least 10 years old, so they can jump over stairs with their skateboards and do flips on their bikes when they are more mature.

lol DK - we also had concrete bases to our play areas...and the play centres were made out of rusty metal!!! But I agree it would be far nicer falling on rubber - lucky children :)
