I just watched the documentary “Forks over Knves”. I have Lupus, my last fasting blood sugar was too high. Is anyone on this site doing a vegan plant based diet. I am not sure I can do it, having grown up in the Midwest, raised on red meat and potatoes. Vegetables being corn and peas, rarely even a salad. I need advise!!

don’t force yourself to eat things you don’t like. Just don’t eat in excess calories of the things you enjoy. Consume a caloric deficit weekly and you’ll lose weight just fine regardless of what foods you put into your mouth

If like red meat, then why go keto?

to quilter: I just got Dr Joel Fuhrman's book and that's basically what it's about. My favorite thing I do to help me with it, is roast a big pan of different veggies that I like most days. Everyday is even better. There are also a lot of plant based food info on YouTube and Pinterest. Good luck, I'm a believer in this diet!

Deadpool12345 she said she has Lupus, not the same ball game....she can't just eat what she likes and not eat what she doesn't like....if she wants to stay up on her feet and out of the hospital she'll have to eat a noninflammatory diet.... I have Lupus and Rheumatoid.

Ah ya that changes things, I didn’t see that before

I would forget about Forks Over Knives, they're pushing a vegan agenda. If you want to get your blood sugar in check think about what raises your blood sugar and start limiting that.

deadpool yes, believe me we sure wish we didn't have to deal with these diseases, however, we have to keep a positive outlook and learn more about foods than our doctors ! lol I can lose weight by calorie counting and not eating the main trouble foods...like sugar, certain kinds of meats, all the starches. We need tons of green things, Kale, spinach, collards, turnips, all those.... most any veggie is okay. I've lost 16 lbs and a lot of inches since Jan 5 ....still another 10 to go...Have a great evening.

Quilter...google all about inflammation foods , there's many good list of the foods to eat and avoid...when you cut out the inflammation in your body the pain gets better. also you can lose weight because all the foods that put weight on are the inflammation foods. the trick is to measure or weigh your foods and log in in here. You'll be shocked at how large of a portion you might be eating. I understand about how you eat...I was raised on a large cattle ranch in Texas...meat and potatoes 7 days a week. lol but it's easy to change the way we eat. I'm doing it and it 's sticking this time. Best wishes and stay well.

these type of documentaries are usually lacking a lot in the science dept. if it atruck a nerve instead if diving all in do you reaearch and try to ease into it. start with one meal a day to switch over to plant based and when you get that nailed down move on and keep a journal on how tou feel through the process or get a coach to help 😁

If you want more info, check out NutritionFacts.org as well. That's how I was introduced to a WFPB diet.

I suggest starting slow and finding foods you enjoy and making similar dishes to what you eat now but compatible with the diet. Remember that this is a fiber rich diet and going to fast may be difficult because it might become windy 🌫. PCRM also has a free Kickstart program to get you started https://www.pcrm.org/kickstartHome

I eat mostly plant based. My WOE has evolved over the years as I add more and more vegetarian dishes to the way I eat. I still eat some animal protein and have chickens so also eat eggs. My portions of meat, chicken or fish tend to get smaller and smaller and I use them more as flavoring rather than a main dish. Now If I eat much meat or poultry I end up bloated and have a horrible stomach ache. Tonight was a "chowder" in quotes as it loosely correlates. With mushrooms, asparagus, onions, celery, veggie broth some milk and 7 oz of shrimp that made 5 good sized filling portions. I needed to use that previously opened bag of shrimp before it's freezer burned. I've watched the documentary and thought it was thought provoking. Just remember those producing them are pushing their point of view, just like any book does. So do your own research as well.

Phil, educating folks about animals abuse isn't pushing a vegan agenda. I've been vegetarian (almost vegan) for almost 15 years. I still get more than 80g of protein daily (the average adult needs half that or less), run half marathons and can leg press almost 500 lbs. It's healthy and safe to eat a vegetable based diet. It also is better for the environment. And anyone who tells me they loves animals but still eats them is a hypocrite in my world.

I love animals, with roasted garlic and onions. Or slow smoked over hardwood. lol

I found it helpful to search “vegan what I ate in a day” on YouTube for lots of really great ideas for good vegan food. I’m not vegan but try to stick to a whole food lifestyle.

I rarely eat meat, occasionally have cold sausage for breakfast but otherwise it’s unusual for me. Most meals include broccoli, spinach, raw tomatoes, avocado, etc. I’ve gotten quite addicted to a lot of fruits these days as well, and someone recently mentioned tofu which I’m a big fan of.

Don't make the common mistake of thinking whole food plant based is the same as vegan. There are vegans who are also WFPB & vice versa, but there are others who are one & not the other, like me. I eat plant based for health reasons & I wear leather belts & shoes; things a vegan would never do. There is a lot of research building up regarding WFPB & its positive effects on autoimmune diseases. John McDougall has a great seminar on YouTube that is primarily about MS, but also covers the causes of autoimmune disease in general, like type I Diabetes, Crohn's Disease & Lupus. It's worth looking up. Rather than share my story here, look in my journal at my 4 month update post. Like others here have said, there's a wealth of free information online. nutritionfacts dot org & drmcdougall dot com are great resources for getting into deeper research. On youtube, highcarbhannah & chantymarie both post lots of easy recipes that are good. McDougall's site also has over 700 recipes. Best of luck.

I saw Forks Over Knives recently, too. I went to Barnes and Nobles and found vegetarian recipe books I liked and then bought them used from Amazon third party vendors. I get fast food salads. I make nachos with cheese but no meat. I still eat meat but I eat less of it.
