PhotogGal's Journal, 13 June 2012

As it turns out, I was right about not having any pain-free days once I started physical therapy. The first time I had pool therapy, I felt great afterwards and the rest of the day -- until I went to bed. That's when I started feeling it, and I ended up being awake on and off all night long.

When I went for PT in the gym on Monday, my piriformis muscle was so tight and sore that they had to spend a good amount of time doing deep tissue massage on it to get that knotty feeling out. It was painful, but the results were worth the temporary agony.

Yesterday was my turn to test the chemicals in the pool here in my little subdivision, so I decided to actually go into the pool and do my Pool PT exercises. I did some extra reps and some extra exercises, and I have been paying for it ever since. I don't want to stiffen up so I might actually go into the pool again later today just to walk, if nothing else. I need to re-build some muscle in my weakened legs, and it's a lot less painful in the water.

Last week I met a man when I walked over to ask him questions about the walker he was using while I was in a restaurant. He was very chatty and ended up inviting me to join him. He has so many health problems and is only three years older than me. He appreciated my kindness in even wanting to talk with someone in his condition. I appreciated that he didn't care that I wasn't wearing makeup and thought I looked fine without it. We have become friends. He is teaching me patience and is a reminder of how I could end up, if I don't start taking my health more seriously. He's fortunate that many, if not most, of his medical costs are covered by Medicare and the VA system. I, however, am not that fortunate. I need to remember that it's much cheaper to eat healthy than it is to pay for all those expensive tests and medications. Living alone and being the independent type also is a great motivator to be able to maintain my independent living status and not have to rely on family or pay for someone to come in and help me.
