Katsolo's Journal, 22 January 2018

It is CHILLY this morning in SoCal. For those of you laughing, the temp in my unheated office this morning is 55, up from 50 two hours ago. Layers, baby, not heaters as those make you sleepy. Wearing a new pair of medium pants this morning, I can see the progress. Went for another long walk last night, got 12K steps in, we now declare the flu in my household over and done! I've been trying to snap a daily shot of my face at my desktop, I can see less roundness. All of these are good to keep me motivated and I'm out of the 170s as of yesterday. Still a ways to go, but it's not as monumental. I've got a heavy schedule this week, but I'm going to try and sneak in some weights.

Based on a discussion with my counselor Friday, I really have let work run the majority of my life and the rest has been dictated by chaos, meaning family, friends and work (yup, again). I need to be really mindful of making time for myself and taking care of myself going forward; otherwise, I'm going to end up in the same place in a few years and it's much harder to recover as you get older.

I'm good at working towards goals, so I'm going to be setting some up for myself the next six-twelve months. I'm probably going to have to make some choices, but that's what life is all about, right? Starting with the pipe dreams today.

So here goes:
I really need another ski trip, the mountains rejuvenate me and it's been three years. Speaking honestly, the mountain would probably kill me this year with the weight gain, so it's cardio time along with specific strength training. Goal: Canadian Rockies. Yeah, I gotta make/save money for this one, but there's a lot of extra stuff in my house, so that can be a part of it.

Swimming - I'm going to look into joining a Masters Swim Team. Hoping there's one at the outdoor pool down the road, if not, will pick a couple days to commute up to UTC area. This is a strength/zen thing for me. Nothing calms me down like a long set. For the uninitiated, this does not mean that I was ever an Olympic athlete, it simply means they won't let you share the pool with the local HS or college swim teams once you graduate and I want the discipline of a coach. There are even competitions, but I'm not looking for that at this point.

Walking - Back to doing it every night, and picking a canyon hike or the beach for weekends. More zen exercise. The watch has been good for me in this sense, I can glance down and see how much more I need to move during the day and those rainy/sick/tired days can really stack up if you're not careful. Thinking about setting a goal for thirty solid days of a long walk with the dogs (meaning all three rings get closed) and maybe a prize for doing it.

Finally, going to post the hideous pic that started this particular journey - tomorrow, because I can't find it on my phone right now. Yes, it was a bad angle, but it exists and it's been my motivation to change and that's what needed to happen.
