The good, the bad and the ugly.

I know that it is beer that always always puts me over my calorie intake. I don't want to give up my lifestyle, which includes open mics and other events with friends where I like to indulge in a few beers. I'm young. I'm not an alcoholic. I just like beer and enjoying drinking. It's hard for me with counting calories because I don't want to starve myself just so I can have a few beers either.

So I'm trying to find a happy medium. Maybe I need to think about upcoming events and plan myself something like 3 or 4 drinking days a week. It is soooo much easier to stay inside RDI when I don't have 500 plus calories of beer to factor in.

Anyway, enough with the bad an onto the good.

Even though I've been going over my RDI more often than not, these are the GOOD things I have done as part of my weight loss journey:

- Stopped drinking soda. Diet and Regular. This is day 19. And used to drink that stuff ALL. THE. TIME.

- Counted my calories, even on days I knew I was going to go over the limit. And I've stuck with it. On day 19 of that too.

- Learned about portion control and what foods are high or low in calories.

- Bought healthier groceries. Swapped chips and cheese galore for baby carrots, celery, apples, bananas & pears!

Beers. Uh. I think you are on the right track, don't limit your "beer intake" or stop having fun with your buddies. You'll be miserable and off your diet in no time. Just limit the number of days you allow yourself beer. If you were going out - lets say - 5 nights a week you can still do that. Only with varied activities. Not every night out includes beer. Cut back one day a week at a time. Just so there is no "beer withdrawal". :P There is no exact science to dieting - your body will set your limits so tweak as you go along. I'm craving an apple so bad today - damn atkins!

Thanks for the advice! I think I will gradually try to decrease my drinking days... and eliminating my habit of having a couple beers even when I'm just watching TV alone will help. :P It can be hard though, damn peer pressure!!

I have the same problem - good beers are just so yummy! And for example tonight I had 2 at trivia with some friends, which put me over my RDI for the day :( But it was worth it and I had a good time. I've found that it is easier to cut it back to 1 beer for "recovery" after an intense workout during the week (I read somewhere that beers are good for muscle recovery), and then have 2-3 days of social drinking. But be careful not to limit what you eat in order to make room for beer calories - I did that last Friday (ate a bunch of salads and veggie pitas) and my stomach could not handle the alcohol on such a light meal.
