ShyGuy's Journal, 27 April 2012

They say, that when it rains, it pours; well, this time; I got struck by lightning. LOL I went, last night, to sign up for and participate in another Kenpo Karate class. About half way through, the class, we were working on an excerise where we sparr against 3 people at once; and then it happened; I dislocated my left shoulder, and ended up in the emergency room until 2:30 this morning. Bummer! This, of course, takes me out of action for a couple of months, at least, as far as my martial arts training goes. I could put in a few expletives, to express how I feel about this, but I think you can all guess how it would make me feel, given my love of training in the martial arts. So, stuff happens, and you move on. :-) Oh well, time for breakfast, have a great day everyone. :-)

Sorry to hear about your injury...I do feel your disappointment and being the motherly type, I wish I could just kiss it and make it all better:) I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason...we will need to watch and see if the reason appears for you. Maybe this will provide an opportunity to work on other physical aspects of your body in preparation for you big comeback. I know my words are of very little consolation this morning but I am truly sorry. Try to enjoy your weekend and I hope that you aren't in too much discomfort.

Sorry to hear about it...but I know you will get over it...and as you say move on. I love what Gwen has to say...maybe there is a reason. :)

Thanks ladies, I apreciate your concern, and kind words. :-) Having dislocated my shoulders, a total of six times, I've come to realize, that injury is part of the risk we take when we choose to live an active lifestyle, that includes the martial arts. I was a couch potato, for many years, and the result of that was, blowing up to 417 pounds. I refuse to let that happen again! I could avoid all risk of injury, by not doing what I do, but then I'd never have known the joy of having earned and putting on that Blackbelt for the very first time, or experiencing everything that came with going into the military, including living in Europe, twice, as well as traveling all over this country, and the many other places I've been. As they say, "The wet comes with the water". :-)

Ouch! At least it happened while doing something you love and not some dumb trip and fall type thing but... ouch! Can you do anything other than sparring? Just do the motions or something to at least keep your form strong? I hope you aren't in too much pain and that you keep up the other stuff. Feel better Mr. K!

Thanks Dani. Yes, I can work on my forms, once my arm is out of this sling, and it will be a long time before I do any sparring again; at least a few months, and even that will be light. About the pain. As long as I don't try to use my arm, too much, there's no pain at all. I didn't feel any pain at all, when they popped my shoulder back into place; I was on some heavy duty medication, and woke up to seeing a sling on my arm, as they were also giving me oxygen, and fluids. Before that, any movement at all, and I would wince from the excruciating pain that I was in. Today, I'm just chilling out, no pain killers, and limiting my movement. :-)

Bummer, so sorry to hear you have been injured...you just got re-started, so heal up fast as you can & in the meantime stay out of "trouble" best as you can, at least you don't need constant pain meds, that's a good thing. But...six times, that's a lot!

Sorry to hear about your injury. I don't know why it is so easy for us to injure ourselves working out. Hope you're on the mend soon.

By no means would I ever suggest that you give up on your dream or the martial arts...I can tell that it is an important part of your life and existence. My statement about reason was not to detour your goal but to look perhaps at why it happened. I know very little about the art so perhaps I misspoke. I was trying to encourage you to find some sort of exercise while on the mend to strengthen yourself for your big comeback in martial arts. I hate these journals sometimes as what is in our heart can be so easily misunderstood. I am in your corner and want nothing but the best for you.

Gwen, I know you are on my side; and as I was having a conversation with one of the head instructors at that dojo, earlier this evening, I was thinking about your words. She suggested that I try out the Pilates class, that they have, or one closer to me, and use that as a means to strengthen my shoulders, and the surrounding muscles, before continuing my martial arts training, full blown. I have no desire to keep injuring myself, so if I take the time build some core strength, I'll benefit in the long run, and be able to train in the martial arts more effectively. So, once again thanks. Sometimes, you have to take a few steps back, in order to move forward again. :-)
