GeoBaehr's Journal, 26 October 2017

Well, today I think I've exhausted all other possibilities for reversing Type 2 diabetes. Tried everything and all kinds of foods and exercise, but nothing fully controlling it. So....I'm committing to LCHF and IF. I've tried both but never fully one or the other or both. This is a challenge as my whole 53 years I've thought all fat is bad and low fat is better....I was always hungry, fighting weight gain, starving myself, trying bulemia/anorexia (fought bad self image), feeling depressed and tired and super stressed. TODAY is a new day. First attempt at a KETO day.... F: 73% P: 16% C: 11%. Boy it was tough to really get the fat and protein without dragging those pesky carbs with me. My whole way of thinking and shopping is going to drastically change. I'm hoping to gain some new friends on Fatsecret and learn A TON from other's wisdom and experiences. This marks my new relationship with food!

Your on the right tract, I have type 2. After an attack of thrush brought on by a spike in my sugar I got serious. Found a great endocrinologist that said I could indeed reverse type 2. I started counting carbs, thier in everything except for meat mainly. The carbs you eat turn into to sugar for energy, not giving your body the chance to burn the fat you have stored. So if you eat less carbs your body burns your stored fat for energy and that equal weight loss. Hope this helps took me awhile to figure the process out. My bs every evening would be 120-135 now its 77 almost every evening. Good luck!

Thanks 8Patty - thanks for reaching out to me! I get that health things happen that boost us in the right direction and sounds like you've got it. I'm so jealous that you have 77 BS every evening! That's awesome! I've done so much research in the last two years on T2D my head is gonna bust! I've already lost 75 lbs and cut bad carbs (done!) and have done extensive exercise of all but the overall BS weren't normal (I've tried every supp known to man to support) and I have Dawn Phenomenon. What I found so far was it WAS the weight initially but there is way more to Insulin sensitivity/resistance for me...it requires the fasting I think and an improvement in dietary FATS. I'm lucky I'm already at the point of no sugar, and I don't crave refined carbs anymore, that alone helps any yoyo blood sugars. So that's where I'm settling in for a run to confirm that LCHF and IF works (keeping the exercise too). I am really trying NEVER to go on any meds, I just use glucose meter daily at and between meals for tight control so I can learn how my body reacts to certain foods. Ultimately, I am praying that LCHF + IF will lessen my Dawn Phenomenon issues....that problem alone raises my overall average. If I can kick that issue maybe I can get my average BS to 77!!

@GeoBaehr. I had an issue with Dawn Phenomenon myself. Eating a little protein late night before bed was suggested to me and did seem to help. I'd just have a bit of cheese or a boiled egg. Eat plenty of healthy fat (my lipid panels are perfect) seemed to help me get past the DP. My fasting blood sugars are now 85-99 average. No BS above 120 if I continue eating Keto and IF. I love that you haven't given up and continue to keep searching for what works for you. Best of luck to you on your journey 😊

Thanks ClarityAnn - I'm thrilled that some protein late night before bed works for you. I've tried that myself, or fats, or Apple Cider Vinegar, high intensity training, or few ounces of red wine...and everything else anyone has tried that I could find through researching the Internet or books. Boy....I had hoped one thing would stick out for me as the winner. I have a feeling that my Cortisol levels rise too much and cause the higher morning BS levels. It starts for me around 5-6 am and lasts until 11-12 pm. That's a long time! after that it can go back to a resting average that holds unless I eat too many carbs. But....I won't give up hope and it is helpful to hear that you don't have any BS above 120 doing Keto and IF. My lipid panel was great just my Triglycerides were above normal. Thanks and best of luck to you too.

Went keto two months ago. It does take a bit of effort to get going. Also trying one meal a day. Generally not hungry during the day and down 15. Stick with it, it'll soon feel like the normal way to eat.

I am having very similar experience to yours - it's frustrating to read about people who "reverse" T2D in just a few weeks on LCFH/KETO and I look at my results and think WHY is this not doing the same for me...Bottom line everybody is different and I know that this is the WOE that I will need to follow for the rest of my life - and I do have so much more energy and have lost 10 pounds without focusing on the weight but it is not easy for me...Thanks goodness for Fat Secret...I'd encourage you to be kind to yourself and "just keep swimming"

Everyone is different.. LCHF is working for me.. But i watched a show called the science of fasting lastnight.. And the Russians have had great results using fasting to treat diabetes..

I read at VirtaHealth.com blog that they are having success reversing Type II diabetes with low carb and ketogenic diets. My lab tests in July showed abnormal/ high A1c, so I put myself on LC, moderate protein, high fat ketogenic diet. I have lost 26 lbs with about 15 more to go to my goal weight.

My husband had regular glucose tests of 200+ in the mornings and would some times get close to 300 after meals... and this was with nightly injections of Lantus. We slowly transitioned to ketogenic style of eating over the last few months... and at first he was really resistant because he was indoctrinated with "FAT MAKES FAT" but the more carbs we cut, and the more dietary fat we added, the better his glucose numbers got. We are now eating 75% fat/20% protein/5% carbs (primarily from green veggies) and his fasting glucose readings are sub 80 and his post-meal readings are sub 100. He has drastically reduced his dose of Lantus and is gearing up to talk to his doctor about stopping it altogether. I hope that you have as much success as we have... it is possible!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!

My results almost went Hypoglycemic (71) after the first month and my A1C is 5.0 or 5.1

Thanks to all of you who recently responded. appreciate the support. I'm thrilled to see how your own journey's of LCHF is working for so many. It takes time and learning to navigate and test the best way for ourselves to treat this T2D disease. It has been a little frustrating over the since self diagnosis in early 2015 because I lost so much weight and continue to on high fat low carbs. I had hoped at least my morning sugars were < 100. I realized from everything shared so far one way doesn't work for all....I'm a scientist so testing and analyzing results works for me and I love that challenge...I just had hoped to find the right key by now, almost 2 years later. I am hoping committing to this way is my personal answer for better health. I really enjoy as a nerd all your detailed numbers, how you made progress in those over time on this diet. Any exercise or other that you do to improve insulin sensitivity. I'll start the upcoming fast challenge of 3 days....the most I have done (with great success) has been 28 hours. I just haven't quite worked it into a weekly regime. Again...thanks all for the support....I feel like I'm in good company.

I test both ketones and glucose and it always just knocks me out to see what and when I eat affecting my data!

Eddielbs - so good to hear you're doing the fast challenge! I'm a little apprehensive before I fast but once into it, it actually feels good. I hope it is the same this time.

Bexa Raven...cool that you check both. I haven't done ketones consistently...how high do yours get (if you don't mind me asking). I think you brought up a good way to test - same time you do glucose....thanks for the ReMind!
