I joined a Meetup walking group about 6 years ago, when I first moved here and retired. Since retiring I gained at least 30 pounds. I find it hard to do much walking because of the additional weight and the weight I had even without those 30 pounds. I've lost 20-25 pounds 2 or 3 times in the past 5 years. I'm now close to a 20 pound loss. This is normally when things fall apart. I'm determined NOT to let it happen again. I decided to join the Meetup group this morning on a walk that is anywhere from 3 to 5 miles. There are usually 10-15 people who do the walk. Since it's a Tuesday most of the regular walkers are retired and my age or older. I like this Tuesday walk but I normally cannot keep up. Everyone walks faster than me and I would probably finish 20 to 30 minutes after everyone else. So I rarely go, because I hate for someone to have to stay behind with the "slow poke". But I went today with my 10 month old pup. The walk started and sure enough within 10-15 minutes I was 5 minutes or so behind everyone. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills so the walk is in the forest and pretty hilly. If it was flat I could keep up. The inclines, even slight inclines are just so hard for me! But I know if I can just do this on a regular basis, and if I keep losing weight I'll be able to keep up with the rest of the group. So, anyway, a nice lady about my age hung back and encouraged me and said she would stay with me for the rest of the walk. We did the 3 mile walk. It was so hard for me on the inclines and I was so tired when I finished. But it felt so good to complete it. My dog Bobby was so excited, he saw his first horses and he kept turning to look at me as if to say "thanks for bringing me today!".

I think I will go again next week. A friend of mine, one of the fastest walkers, texted me and said next week she would walk with me. Again, I feel bad that I hold anyone back, but I need to keep doing this. I used to hike a lot and am motivated to get back into shape so I can hike again.
