Assessment of Day 1 "Maintenance Break"
Weigh in this a.m. - 189.0 (within normal range)

Yesterday went well for the first full day of my Maintenance Break, and it wasn't easy! Thursdays are normally a "cheat day" for me. And, since I decided there will be no "cheat" days during this maintenance break, I had to plan extra diligently NOT to go over 2200 calories, the top end of my maintenance calories at this height, weight, and activity level.

During my weight loss WOE, I still logged cheat meals, but didn't really work that hard to maintain a calorie restriction because it is indeed a "cheat meal" and usually I banked enough calories to keep the weekly and monthly average right on track.

The irony here is it might have paid to let myself eat more because I'm actually trying to get my caloric average up to 1700 plus/day. But, I felt it essential to practice some calorie restriction on days I had normally set aside for splurging. Whether I'm maintaining this weight or a future goal weight , it is my contention to genuinely stay within maintenance calories and not have cheat days. Why? Because, generally speaking "maintenance calories" in my assessment are "enough", especially if one considers during maintenance one is allowed to eat more daily than they might on their "weight loss WOE".

I did okay and kept it too 2000.

Note to SMP: I also kept alcoholic beverages to 2 and let the guys in the office know I need to cut back on Alcohol, which they know means I may not be partaking in "Beer Thursdays". I'll try for 5 ounces instead of 6 of wine tonight and wean slowly. I may not be going dry over night, but it's a start! ;-)

I will say, it felt liberating to hop on the scale this morn and not having to worry about whether or not I lost a pound. Since I set a 5lb fluctuation, which is normal in maintenance, 189 was perfect and as we all know by now, it's water weight.

The next step is trying to get that caloric average up to 1700. I'm even open to a higher average if it can maintain 186-187. Sometimes I think by the time I knock that caloric average up to where it needs to be, it will be time to cut calories again. We think 5 weeks is a long time, but it really isn't that long. lol. I've done enough research on "re-setting" that indicates the higher one can get their daily caloric average to be and still maintain the weight they're at, the less challenging it is to lose the pounds without having to keep such a low RDI. In short if I'm maintaining at 1800 cals, cutting back by 400 cals to initiate weight loss, is a lot less challenging than maintaining at 1500 and attempting to lose weight on 1200 cals/day.

We'll see what we can finagle.

Today is cardio and I have a 45 second plank planned. Since, my leg is feeling stiff today, I'll keep resistance at 15. Mom and me are pretty convince my right leg is just toast. But, I'm following horseshu's line of thinking in keeping in my mind the MS thresholds will change daily and sometimes within a day.

My legs were so mobile and flexible last Wednesday, for the first time in almost 2 months, my gait looked almost normal. It's not that I had any sensation come back, but the muscles were barely spastic so I looked like a NORMAL WALKER.

CAN I TELL YOU HOW GOOD THAT FELT, EVEN IF IT WAS JUST A FOR A SHORT WHILE!

What an amazing feeling when you're legs are DOING what they're supposed to even if you can't feel them!

I knew it was short lived, but I took advantage and popped the resistance on the bike up to 17 and burn 348 cals.

Today's a different story and of course it's hot outside which makes the banding and spasticity tighter. I also have to go to a mobility assessment with para transit. Soooo, no level 17 resistance today, but that's okay, it's good to know my threshold can change and I'll have good days! That's very heartwarming and inspiring. I can hold on to that...

Have a beautiful day, everyone
Sending love and blessings to you, you, and YOU

If someone starts a group for Maintainers, I will be one of the first to join! In fact, I was surprised there wasn't one already, but in it's own way it shows how low it is on the priority list. Heather Robinson's community actually has a waiting list, but her maintainers group is for both those that are taking a maintenance break and those in long term maintenance. What I really appreciate about her perspective is that she takes it beyond the sound bite of "I've found a WOE I can stick with for the rest of my life". That's just the first step, there are a lot of other key elements to maintaining, such as a few you can already see in this entry. The psychological component is just as essential. People attach a lot of illusions about happiness to weight loss and are stunned when they realize they aren't true and being smaller isn't a panacea for joy, it merely opens the door to other possibilities for joy. Sometimes, people get caught up in an achievable weight versus a maintainable weight, and those 2 things aren't always the same. Some people discover being thinner doesn't mean they won't get your heart broken and if they're not prepared to deal with those moments when they're smaller, it can lead them right back to unhealthy habits used to cope when they were big. And, still these are just a few other factors to consider.I know it sounds like I'm sucking all the joy out of it, LOL but I've learned if folks are already taking these things into consideration from the beginning, they stand a great chance of enjoying what they've achieved for a lifetime instead of just a moment.

I just started a new group up called the maintainers, you should get a invite shortly, together we can do this
19 Aug 17 by member: DO N OK
I'm in, D! And, anyone interested in providing input/and or has questions on weight maintenance strategies, maintenance breaks, and maintenance challenges is invited to join!

I'll join the group also (although I'm not officially in maintenance mode). I want to be ready-have been thinking about how that will look.
19 Aug 17 by member: Horseshu1
oh, good Horseshu! You're really close to maintenance and your input will mean a lot! :-)

I may start one that's women-only. Different challenges, different pressures, and quite frankly, for the maintenance issues most relevant to me I have zero interest in male input. (Apologies for gender-binary generalizations; I'm aware that there are members of other gender identities and expressions on FS. I'm not up to speed on inclusive language yet.)
