Tuesday. I'm back!

Last week was rough and on top of that, I was getting ready to teach at a fiber retreat last weekend. I had to get 12 looms warped for my students. I left Thursday. I got back late Sunday. Yesterday I shopped and recuperated.

The retreat was so much fun . . . exhausting, but fun. The first class I gave was on beginning tablet weaving. The whole class caught on and actually finished their beginner piece. The second class was on Egyptian diagonals, a very complex form of tablet weaving. It was listed in the classes as ADVANCED. It was on the wall in the class room as ADVANCED. Out of the six students who came, one had never done tablet weaving, three had taken my beginner class, one had taken my double weave class the year before and still had THAT warp on her loom. She had never touched it since. One actually knew how to tablet weave. The class was a disaster, although, the one who knew how to tablet weave actually did catch on by the end of the class. She was going great guns.

I don't even want to know was my reviews were at the end of that. The students hand in critique sheets. Sat afternoon, I took a cold-process soap making class. I think I really would like to make my own soap. It's not all that complicated and he actually taught us how to figure out what ingredients to use for which skin types and the chemistry and numbers involved. All-in-all, a great time.

The people who attend these things are my kind of people. There was a lot of visiting, hugging, visiting, sharing, learning, visiting, hugging, laughter . . . a fairly perfect weekend.

I earned enough from the income of the two classes and the sale of one of my spinning wheels to buy my son's iPad. He's ordered the new one. I can't wait until his gets here so I can have mine. LOL! I bought "iPad for Dummies" so that I won't look like one. My heart rate monitor came at the same time, from Amazon, so I had it for the weekend. I also bought "Choose to Lose," a book on carb cycling. I want to see what that is all about. Maybe I can get off this plateau.

I really missed you all last week. I was in a funk and working beyond my present capacity, so had fairly well worn myself out. I will spend part of today catching up on journals (in between trying to catch up on the housework that also got neglected.) Enjoy your day. It's supposed to get into the 80s here today . . . maybe even break a record. What a weird winter it has been!

Toodles!!!

Oh, and Bren, I did commune with the moon Thurs and thought of all my FS buddies. Love you all!!!

Welcome back Johanne, good deal on the iPad. I, however, would trade an iPad for a spinning wheel any day of the week. I've had my eye on a yew wood spinning wheel from the UK for years and years and years. How are you feeling?

Bren, it was totally clear and totally beautiful where I was. The moon was gorgeous in all her glory. I had a wonderful time. What a great bunch of people. Love you. I'm glad I'm back too.

There is something wonderfully ironic about using money from old techs like weaving and spinning to buy something hi tech like an iPad. I'm hoping to get into weaving when I semi retire, don't know about the spinning part but maybe I'll get some sheep.

That is my kind of weekend! I have never tried weaving but would love to....I just love arts and crafts, they somehow reach into you in such a wonderful way....I have always enjoyed the simpler things in life (like men ha ha ha). These days life can be so hectic and empty, getting involved in making something is rejuvenating for the mind and body.....nice to have you back XX

Heather, the wheel I sold was a little single drive, Ashford "Traveller." I still have two spinning wheels in the house . . . a double drive, maple Saxony and an antique great wheel (1840s Arkansas wheel). I want to sell the Saxony, as well, because I want a Majacraft "Rose." I have tried just about every wheel that is on the market today and some of them are much more beautiful and traditional looking than the "Rose," but none of them are as useful. Instead of cup hooks on the flyer, it has a ring that slides along a rod. You can do any weight, texture, type of thread without it catching on the cup hooks. You don't have to thread an orifice. It has sealed bearings, so there's no oiling. It folds smaller for travelling. You can get boilable plastic bobbins to set the spin before plying. You can get different sizes of heads for different weights of wool. It has many ratios for different spins. It also runs $1,000. LOL! Majacraft's new spinning wheel, The "Aura" is even more amazing, with an even more amazing price tag. I figure if I start saving for it now (now that I have something to save . . . heehee) I should be able to afford one by Christmas. My DIL sells them, so I'll get a dealer price. As for how I'm feeling, I'm feeling well. I just tire more easily. My gall bladder surgery is scheduled for next Monday. I hope I have my iPad by then, so I can stay in touch while I'm in the hospital.

FOL, I love weaving and spinning. I hadn't seen how funny trading a spinning wheel for an iPad was until you pointed it out. It really is ironic. BUT, I still have two wheels and a 46", 8 harness floor loom with a sectional beam, a 36", four harness Mighty Wolf folding loom, a Wolf Pup, two huge, floor inkle looms, various spindles and foot wheels, various small hand looms and a table inkle loom, and lots, lots more. I also embroider, knit, crochet, etc. I don't think one little iPad will make much of a dent. LOL. My DIL raised Icelandic sheep and also has quite a few wethers of various breeds, alpacas and angora goats. We have LOTS of fleecy things to play with. You'll enjoy being a fiber goob when you retire.

Di, I have been involved in needlework and crafts of various kinds since the age of 8. That's when I learned to embroider and crochet. My mother, grandmother and aunties all did it. My sister and I, and now my daughters all carried it on. I got into "really" weaving about 15 years ago after I joined the SCA. I'd tried it on a very small scale since the 70s, but it really escalated when I moved to the middle of the country and had nothing to do. LOL! I'm glad to be back. Last week was not very nice. The weekend more than made up for it.
