Bluecoaster's Journal, 19 July 2017

I'm starting to get excited. I'm now only 7 pounds from my first goal I set last October of weighing 199. I've lost 55.2 pounds.

Here are my reflections:

It's been 9 months of focused, but fun and really reasonable effort. I'm excited in part because I never felt deprived, famished, or foggy headed. On the contrary, I've been in pretty much a perpetual state of awe of the power and effects of my ketogenic lifestyle. I've really put it to the test because I'm done with "dieting."

I've made Keto lemon bars to share with non-Keto people at Halloween, had a great Thanksgiving, made a Keto Birthday cake for a non Keto crowd and baked Keto cookies at Christmas. I made Keto Tiramisu for a non- Keto crowd on Morher's day. And I've had a couple weeks where I had a good sized chunk of chocolate with my coffee every single day. I've done nothing but restaurants while on vacation. I get take-out at least once every single week. Every single time I've been able to make delicious choices that didn't spoil my efforts and kept me on track.

I'm excited because NEVER have I experienced a "diet" that could allow this kind of flexibility and realistic change. No "diet" has passed these tests. The reality of not being chubby or fat for the rest of my life without dieting is hitting me.

When I started Keto I had no energy or motivation to exercise. Best of all- getting a 50 pound layer of weight off coupled with the consistent energy Keto provides has spurred the bug to exercise and now to finally get back into lifting weights, something I haven't done for 17 years!

This is really happening and the best is yet to come!

Wow! Thank you for sharing this detail of your progression. I'm just experimenting with keto for now and not making any concoctions because I don't feel deprived or have social expectations on me like those with young families do. Before I go back to strength training, I'm working on posture issues and balancing some muscle groups (tight chest muscles, weak upper back) so now is a good time to get an idea of keto baseline without training. Thank you so much for your support and information as I get started!

As for me I never call it a Diet, I call it a( WOE ) Way of Eating as I figure a Diet limits yourself, and you have some great recipes, and Keep the fire burning on your stove !!!!

Right way to think DO N OK. This is not a diet, but in a life changing way of eating. We change our way of thought and eating, it changes our life, for the good.

I'm new to this app & inspired by your meals. How did you get into the keto diet? Is there a specific meal plan you follow? How did you find it?

BB_1984- To answer your question--Funny story. Some things are just meant to happen. Last Fall I wasn't actively trying to find a new lifestyle (swamped as single Mom w/ my 3 kids under 14yrs). My Mom found out she needed knee surgery & her surgeon wouldn't set a date until she lost 25 pounds. He suggested low carb & mentioned Atkins. I wanted to support her, she was in a lot of pain so I did the research to guide her & became her buddy. I noticed shocking changes immediately-besides satiety & weight loss, some health issues disappeared right away. I became fascinated by the whole concept of the ketogenic diet & started reading & researching more. I was so impressed with the quality of changes I was seeing that I decided to try to apply Keto to as many situations, holidays etc. because I wanted to see if it was going to be sustainable or kind of a pain. Within 3 months of starting, I donated all of the pasta, rice, canned beans etc. in our pantry to make space for my low carb ingredients. The whole family is eating a fraction of the carbs that they used to. I haven't followed the typical stages of the Atkins approach (I based my progression intuitively into new foods, different macros based on roadblocks/ challenges/ that I know are falling / will fall into my path) but I am very grateful to have been at least introduced to Ketosis through the Atkins "Induction" phase because A) it was very clear & B) I believe people who want to make Keto a permanent lifestyle need to get comfortable with the concept of building most of their meals upon a foundation of vegetables. Not everyone would agree with me though. I have experienced the body becoming this amazingly efficient machine not only at generating unlimited energy through ketosis, but with plenty of vegetables/ fiber- moving fuel through the entire digestive system with impressive efficiency & regularity. Oh, and by the way, BOTH my Mom &I have lost over 55 pounds since last October. 👍😊

After reading your first post above, and then reading all the comments I am following you!!! I am new to this way of eating and I have only been on it one day, today. But I do feel so much better, and so full, after eating my meals. No, I don't take pictures of them, but trust me, I am working hard to read and know all I need to about this way of eating. I refuse to call it a diet, I would rather call it a new way of life. Thanks for the information, we all who are just learning are learning from your posts, and we need that info. Thanks again. Keep them posts coming.

SL- Welcome to day 1 and congrats on embarking on this new journey! Right away I want to say that some of the carbier foods I post like especially berries, but also nuts are often better for later on down the road, month or so-once you have become fat adapted. I hope you are drinking plenty of water and even a cup of bouillon per day helps with keeping the salts up. If you have any unusual symptoms starting Keto please ask for help here on FS and we can help you out. There can be a few bumps in the beginning. I just star posting pics in the last 90 days- previously I had only logged food/ weight on FS. Cheers! And let us know how you do tomorrow! 😊

Thank you Bluecoaster!!! I do appreciate your reply. I do some berries only because I bought them and Hubby won't eat many, and I am not allowing them to go to waste. I am looking forward to Friday, to see how I did on my scales and to weigh-in. I know that I will have ups and downs, but hey, life is all about coping with those and learning from the experience, right? Thanks again for all the support here. I look forward to reading more of your post.
