maeday42's Journal, 30 April 2017

Gosh, my younger brother is visiting and his diabetes is worse then mine, he's taking a bunch of insulin and pills. It's so hard for not to want to slap food out of his mouth. Not only did he have a bagel for lunch, but a whole potato for dinner. At night before we went to bed, we both tested his was almost 200, mine was 94 (of course following Keto I ate none of those things). I made Keto friendly chocolate cake and he said "that's good, but too much work when I want a snack". OMG! I mixed 5 ingredients in a mug and that's too much effort for your health!!! I don't want to tell him what to do, I told him of the benefits from following Keto and he says he's not interested. I love him, I can't tell him what to do, but I fear for his life. Mom harps on him, BIG TIME, and that doesn't help.

It's so hard with loved ones, when you know what would help them and they're just not ready to be open to it. I have a niece who is heavier every time I see her. I went through so much misery in my life, both health-wise and social/emotional. I want to help her, but if I talk to her about it, she shuts down and doesn't speak to me. We all need to come to changes when we're read, I guess. -- Feeling your frustration!

Old adage time, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." He's still in denial of even being diabetic. My soon to be ex was as well for many years and would have been way further out of control if I hadn't done most of the cooking and food prep. And he'd even witnessed the results on my parents and seen their amputations and my father's gout and his eye problems and nerve damage. But if you haven't lived with the results on a daily basis, sometimes it isn't enough to scare you stupid. And sometimes it's overwhelming and you just give up. Can't tell which case is your brother's. ☺️You are right on that your mom is just making him more stubbornly determined to deny the obvious though. That one seems pretty clear. His wake up may come in the form of a hospital visit to correct a diabetes caused illness, but let's hope it comes sooner.

My father is the same way.. he's not diabetic yet, but in danger of it. My Mom and I have made huge changes to our diets and lost about 70lbs between us in the past few years, but my Dad just won't listen to sense. We've tried and tried to share what we've learned. He can't get the hang of it. Won't prep, won't learn to cook anything, eats whatever he wants when he eats out.. Some of his staples are PB and Mayonnaise sandwiches, 1/2-1 full cup of nuts at a time, Luna Bars grabbed on his way out of the house.. I hate when he comes home from work and I hear him rummaging in the kitchen, wishing he was picking something that will fuel him and knowing he'll eat something that makes him sicker. He's 5'5 and over 245lbs at this point. He has gout, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, general aches and pains that make him groan a lot just walking up and down the stairs. It makes me sad to watch him make himself sicker when the solution is so clear. And for myself, I wish I had a better example in him. I love my Dad and I want him to be healthy and strong, but the reality is, if he keeps going the way he has (and he probably will), we'll probably lose him much earlier than necessary. It makes me so angry at him that sometimes it's hard to remember that the root of my anger is because I really, really love him.

I get it. I'm recently diagnosed diabetic. I'm on 2 meds but no insulin. I'm being careful about what I eat. My sugars have been on point. Others in my life are diabetic and eat whatever they want and are on lots of insulin then don't get why their sugars are 200-300. It is frustrating.

WOW it's so hard to tell our loved ones how to or what to eat. On January 2nd 2017 the LORD put a word in my heart to change my life I was 480 lbs and was stricken with diabetes and High blood pressure, after chang my eating habits (low carb and counting calories) I started to drop, I'm now 405 lbs and in early March my doctor took me off the diabetic meds as I no longer have diabetes and lowered my blood pressure meds and she says by June I will be free from high blood pressure.

Can you please share the recipe for Keto chocolate cake. I'm new and would love to make it if I'm craving something "sweet". Thanks!

LAVA CAKE Oh yes! You read correctly! 30 seconds in the microwave and you have this gooey lusciousness satisfying your nagging chocolate cravings! 2 net carbs! INGREDIENTS: 2 tbsp cocoa powder, unsweetened 1 tbsp Pyure sweetener - I have no idea what this is I use Swerve or Stevia 1/4 tsp baking powder 1 pinch of salt 1 egg 1 tbsp heavy cream 1/2 tsp vanilla extract INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a bowl add dry ingredients and mix well. 2. Next add wet ingredients and mix well. 3. Pour mixture in a mug or ramekin dish. 4. Microwave for 30 seconds. Don't over do it, the top should be shiny, but not move. 5. Add your favorite sugar-free ice cream or some more whipped cream! Depending on the ingredients you use, the carbs will be different, so make sure you look at your ingredients - Like some heavy creams have 1 carb for 2 tablespoons, Land O' Lake has no carbs, so I use that. Mine works out to be a little over 2 carbs with the ingredients I have, I whip a little extra cream or a table spoon of ice cream (I've made).

There's no flour type ingredients in the lava cake?
01 May 17 by member: smprowett
Nope none at all. Believe it ont the cocoa powder acts as the binder. I just had one after dinner with a big dollop of whipped cream.

Add a Tbs of nut flour (I like hazelnut) and you get a more cakey brownie. Delicious and a healthy meal. I like to add orange oil and or vanilla. And serve it with a stevia sweetened dollop of labne (or greek yogurt or sour cream). Yum.

Hey can I have that recipe?

I don't know you but I'm proud of you for sticking to it and continuing to push through!!! It took my family about 5 years to start taking matters into they're own hands and make healthy choices....keep doing the right thing and eventually you will start to rub off on them....if onlythey knew how much they were hurting themselves 😕

beckisfood thank you so much! Your words mean a lot to me. Truly, I cannot explain the feeling that came over me as I read your note. More then anything I hope you're right, my little brother (ha he's 6'7 and 53) means a lot to me and I want him to be healthy, happy and stick around for a long time. I fear he won't by the way he's ignoring his diabetes.

I agree with Becki. Proud of you for sticking to it and continuing even though he seems so unsupportive.
