Johanne's Journal, 31 January 2012

The last day of January.

Something wonderful happened yesterday. My son, who also just happens to be my landlord, told me he is no longer going to charge me rent. He was already paying my utilities, Direct TV, land line, cell phone, internet connection and I was only paying $350 rent a month for my whole house. He was already being wonderful! Unfortunately, the $350 rent is half of my income. By the time I pay my auto insurance, med bills, and one tank of gas per month, my groceries are down to mostly beans and rice.

I think what set it off was my car battery went dead. My son came to jump start it for me and realized the reason the battery had gone dead was because I hadn't driven it since Christmas. I also can't remember the last time I had an oil change. I just can't afford gas OR an oil change, so I was saving my tank of gas for emergencies.

His name is on my bank account, so he can see that I waste absolutely nothing. He said that he could afford it and I can't. What this means is, I will be able to buy real groceries. I will be able to have an occasional treat. I will be able to go to more SCA events. (I've been skipping them a lot lately. They're still not expensive in the great scheme of things, but more than I have been able to afford lately with prices of everything going up.) I can afford an occasional outfit as I lose weight instead of relying completely on hand-me-downs. It was like a second Christmas!

I have the greatest children ever! Sometimes I feel like an old, discarded hippie. I keep wondering where I went wrong, that I can't support myself. My sister did everything right. She's very wealthy, has a beautiful home, a fantastic job that she loves and her original husband. LOL! Basically, I feel like a failure. And then I realize, I must have done something right. I have fantastic, successful adult children and many, many friends who love me. I guess, actually, I am a very rich, very blessed lady.

OK, I keep getting sidetracked and I still haven't made my coffee. I'm off. :-)

I'd say raising healthy successful kids is a hard job and a serious accomplishment Jo. Congratulations.

That is a lovely story! What Kingdom (or Principality or whatever) of the SCA? I haven't gone to an event in years myself but was active for years in various areas.

I'm in Calontir, just east of Kansas City, MO. I moved out here from Atlantia (D.C. area) 17 years ago. I moved from an area where I had access to so much free entertainment, I really didn't need friends. My kids grew up with the Smithsonian in their back yard. Once I moved here, I didn't know anyone and there's really nothing to do out here if you can't afford theaters, etc. Even the museums are expensive. I had a 7 year old, special needs daughter. If it weren't for the SCA, I probably would have lost my mind. Now that she's grown and I'm old, it allows me to stay active and social. For me, it's really a blessing. My SCA name is Johanne of Fisher Gate.
