THEbiggestloser's Journal, 27 January 2010

So this is going to sound weird but I really wish I could meet the old me. Like an actual life-size version of myself when I weighed more. My current facebook profile pic is of me before I lost the 40 lbs and, to be honest, I don't think I look very big in that picture. In fact, I think I look pretty much the same. Now I know that isn't the same because none of my clothes fit anymore and I have abs now, well sorta. But I look at that picture and others from around that time and I just can't figure out where the extra 40 pounds was!

On a related note, yesterday I logged into my traineo.com site which is a site much like this one which I used when I was first starting to lose weight. My current weight back then was 190 lbs and my goal weight was 155. I logged in my current weight of 158 and am only three pounds away from my old goal. I remember thinking back then how amazing it would be if and when I finally reached my goal. Three pounds away and I don't feel any different. I worked hard to lose the weight but now that I'm here I just want to lose more. Still, it's crazy to think about being that "big"! My work tshirt was a medium and fit snugly. Now that same shirt is almost dress-like on me. YET I DON'T REALLY FEEL ANY DIFFERENT! I always thought losing the weight would make me feel great. Why doesn't it?

Regarding not feeling any differently in our bodies...I think it's because it's hard to see or feel gradual changes. Co-workers, family members, friends, etc all say I've lost weight but because I look at myself everyday I can't see it either. We should trust our scales and more importantly a measuring tape to let us know how much we've lost. Also, maybe it's the same reason people with eating disorders see a distortion of themselves in a mirror. We all have different degrees of self body image.

Very good point. I actually haven't measured myself at all! I think I may run to the store tomorrow to get a measuring tape!

Sounds like you lost the weight the "right" way, slowly and steadily and maybe that's why its not so noticeable to you - pick up 40 pounds (gym weights or even bags of potatoes at the grocery store maybe - carry them around a bit - then put them down - gives you a different perspective....
