"Upon waking up
How do we cultivate a kind heart? It is not enough to tell ourselves that we should be nice, because telling ourselves what we should or should not be, feel, or do doesn’t make us become that way. Filling ourselves with "shoulds" often just makes us feel guilty because we never are what we think we should be. We need to know how to actually transform our mind. In other words, we must realize the disadvantages of being self-centered. We must truly want to develop a kind heart, not just keep thinking that we should develop a kind heart. In the morning, when we first wake up, before getting out of bed, before thinking about what we will eat for breakfast or which obnoxious jerk we will see at the office, we can start the day by thinking, "Today as much as possible, I won’t harm anybody. Today as much as possible I am going to try be of service and benefit to others. Today I want to do all actions so that all living beings can attain the long-term happiness of enlightenment."

I work in a juvenile detention center where the kids are hurt and angry and often nasty to me. This is my daily work: to be kind and to teach by example. Thank you for this inspiration.

Thank you for posting this. I sometimes struggle with just being nice. It is wonderful to know that I am not alone. It is wonderful to hear these words of encouragement. I will try to live by this way of thinking.

i have a system of just doing 1 good thing a day we have to look out for our interests most of the time so i pick 1 person who deserves assistance and i can give it without undue cost and i just help them along then i return to the norm which is we both benefit or i benefit.

I try to think about times that someone has said something to/complimented me that made me feel good. Compliments are free, but are rich in value! I don't know why, but usually a stranger saying it to me seems to affect me more than if it's someone I know. Seems odd, right? Well, I think it's easy to stay within our own comfort zones and tell our friends that their top looks cute, notice new shoes or a haircut, but it's much harder to step out of our comfort zone (for most people) to compliment another. I guess that is why it feels better when it's a stranger saying something. So, even if I don't have money to give, I have smiles and compliments all around. For instance, I loved having red framed glasses several years ago. I couldn't find any that shade when it was time to get new ones, so I got a more crimson/burgundy red the next time. Then a more graphite color after that and then black after that (which I haven't replaced in about 5 years now due to job changes a few times and the insurance loops that come with that). I really miss wearing the first red ones the most. My next ones will be red again! Anyway, whenever I see someone with red glasses, I always aim to go give them a compliment on the bold look and tell them I love it! I see their eyes light up and it puts a smile on their face. Sure, I give other genuine compliments all the time, but man... something about telling someone how well their glasses look on their face just does something to people. Wow! :-) Thanks for the inspiration post and the reminder!

All of these things are called "service to others" and it is what we are here on earth for. The more we can do for others, the better persons we in turn become. @ehead, your explanation about giving compliments and the like, (a genuine smile) is absolutely free and yet people in general are afraid to give of themselves in that way, maybe that's part of why it is so valuable when given : )

Ehead has some wisdom there. My name is also E Head (Elise). Funny.

Thanks, Aussie Elise. My first name is Erika. My sister-in-law has the same first initial E, same middle name C, and of course H for Head, so we have the same initials too!

Billtech66 - My mother's advice, that she fed me all my life, was always, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Basically, before doing or saying something to another, I stop to think how I would feel if they did it to me. Just saying. Hope you are having a better day and a great weekend. Kathryn
