Gave up smoking (42 years worth!) just over 6 months ago, retired at the same time and went with the bride on a 52 day tour of England and Edinburgh. A good holiday with lots of great food and wine, followed by a Christmas & New Year where I denied myself nothing. So I'm now about 15kg heavier than when I last worked, but a non-smoker! Prior to, and after the UK trip I walk moderately swiftly for about 40-50 minutes every day. At the beginning of February I'll be taking up yoga after an 18 year absence, trying to create a daily home practice that will keep me flexible and strong. I love to cook and my recipes are varied - traditional, asian, Mediterranean, middle eastern - with minimal potato, rice and pasta; lots of onion, tomato, garlic and chilli and a good spread of meat & fish. Although blood tests at retirement showed elevated blood pressure and possible prostate problems I have a very cynical view of the medical industry and will be responsible for my own health.
