JockoT's Journal, 16 January 2017

While reading "The Obesity Code" I became aware of the issues around drinking Diet Soda, so I did some further research. I am astounded at what I found. Far from helping you to lose weight studies have found that people who change from "regular" soda to diet, without any other dietary changes, actually gain weight. The sweeteners in diet soda actually cause a greater Insulin spike than sugar does, and as it is Insulin Resistance I am wanting to reduce this is counter productive. It also appears that the artificial sweetener fools your body into thinking it is going to get sugar, and when it finds it isn't getting sugar it switches on a craving for sugar. And if you give in to that craving . . . . . . . . . . . .
So if you add to all this the fact that you are feeding your body a man made chemical, the side affects of which we don't full understand, Diet Soda may not be the best option. I am stopping using it as of now. It will be water in future. If I do have the very occasional soda, I will go for the "full fat" variety.

I have a washing on this morning, so it will be umpteen flights of stairs for me today. Aiming for 40 flights. It had been a while since I logged that many.

Have a great week and keep safe.

Yes, all those diet and no-added sugar products are a bit suspect in my view. If it isn't aspartame and the like, it's high-fructose corn syrup. Good luck on ditching the stuff. A friend of mine told me she found it as hard to give up as the sugary kind, presumably because the brain and body are fooled, as your research shows, into believing it is. Best wishes.

I ditched pop of any kinds months ago. I did take a single drink of Pepsi a couple of weeks ago, my granddaughter had just opened one "for the road" and then forgot to take it with her. I took one drink before pouring the can down the sink and it was awful I cant believe how many gallons of the stuff I have drank and thought it was wonderful. And this was the kind made with "real sugar". I'm still waiting for that same reaction to ice cream!! *sigh*

I drink fizzy mineral water. If I wanted to, I could add fresh squeezed lemon juice. Before I stopped working, I worked with many younger people who had diabetes and they were clearly addicted to the diet sodas and all were overweight too.

Totally agree about normal and diet soda Jocko, I don't touch them anymore. I have been cutting out sugar for some time now and find I don't miss it. Looks like you will get plenty of exercise today, have a good one!

Hi Jocko-I agree with rhontique- lol and carbonated mineral water is a good substitute to get the fizzy fix, I switched about a year ago and am really enjoying it now.

They make you hungrier. That's why the fast food restaurants love them.

I heard that diet coke is worse but I feel I have my cravings a under control. If I'm really craving sugar one or two pieces of candy won't hurt. I still rather have the diet coke over the regular (high calorie s)

I hope Diet Tonic water doesn't fit into the equation of insulin spiking. I drink that in the summer with lime (okay ... and vodka). LOL! I lke Perrier mineral water. They come flavored, too. I drink plain water with lime and a bit of stevia everyday.

From what I have read, Stevia spikes Insulin levels.

Blue. I no longer believe that Calories are the problem, but Insulin Resistance.

I don't use that much Stevia but I do realize long term studies haven't been done on the use of it either. Liquid Stevia is less processed than powdered. Read this: http: // www. marksdailyapple .com / stevia/
