A Calorie is Not a Calorie

I don't know how many people keep abreast of nutritional research, but a few years ago Coke and some of the other soda companies came out with research that stated a calorie is a calorie. We simply needed to move more. I can still see the commercial of a runner downing a Coke after a long run. Seriously? We are supposed to believe that? Unfortunately our brainwashed society believes if it is on TV then it is true. Oh how mistaken we are.

Recent research into what causes obesity has yielded some interesting results that seems to contradict that research. We now know that our bodies handle sugar differently that whole foods. Consume 120 calories from a soda and that sugar is going to be converted into fat. It's simply what our bodies are designed to do. Fat is supposed to be our energy stores during a time of famine. When we were hunter gatherers we would find sweet tasting food and gorge on it. We knew it was only available for a short period of time and we needed that fat to get us through the lean winters.

Now conversely, eat 120 calories of protein. Our bodies are not going to convert that into fat. It is going to convert it into amino acids, hormones and enzymes our bodies need to repair itself. It's what allows us to build muscle. Eating that protein allows us to burn the fat stores we built up eating the sugars. Our problem is we consume more sugar than our bodies can use and we end up in a fat surplus. Until you use up those stores, you are never going to lose weight.

Simple carbs such as breads and pastas are the one food we do not need to survive. In fact, you can eat a diet of high fat and protein and nothing else and you will do just fine. Of course that comes with the caveat that you are eating nutritious protein such as pastured beef, pork and fowl. Try eating like this on regular corporate meat and you will have nutritional issues.

So by now you understand that the quality of food is probably more important than anything else you do. Garbage in, garbage out. Obesity and weight loss has been turned into something appearing to be too complex to solve on your own. That is the fault of big business and big pharma. There is a simple solution and we all inherently know what that is. The problem is divorcing ourselves from the rich, sweet foods that we have become addicted to, and yes that includes me!

I agree with you whole heartedly. The food lobby has immense power over the standard american diet, and executives making profit decisions tend to create food products made out of the cheapest available materials HF corn syrup, etc. A big battle now is waging on how to label the "ingredients" list to make items look healthier than they are.

I agree with you for the most part, however, my body requires fiber in order to function digestion properly. I've been on high protein meal plans before and ended up with issues in the digestion department. ;)

Thanks for this - you are right. We need to feed our bodies good food (calories) in order to move the scale numbers downward. And sugar makes me feel terrible!

High protein diet has to be done correctly with the right foods. By high protein it does not mean 70% protein. It has to be balanced with high fat, which is what it should really be called. 70% fat and 30% protein is the ideal proportion on this diet. Most people don't realize that the fat is where all of the nutrients are stored. It is also where the toxins are stored. If you don't buy quality protein you could end up causing even more damage.

I really appreciate your posts, thank you for making the effort to inform. I gave up trying to disseminate information some months back. I never realized how contentious the whole "diet wars" thing could get. It's stupid, really, how some people cling to the old school of thought about calories being the main problem, claim that cutting calories is "new, cutting edge science", and proliferate the thinking that got most people where they are in the first place. Be wary of the pushers of "bro-science", if they haven't started taking pot shots at you yet, they probably will sooner rather than later.

Your posts are great to read and refresh on similar research I've been trying to find. Have you by change watched the sugar lecture "Sugar: The Bitter Truth"? I always find that a great reminder on calories are not just calories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

I started following Dr. Robert Lustig who was the real pioneer in discovering what sugar does to us. Look him up on youtube, he has several webinars available. Really eye opening.

Good posts I have been targeting 70% fat(good saturated fat) on a daily basis, but seem to get only 59-60% and have been ok with that..I have done the "too much protein thing" and that definitely messes up my satiety versus the higher fat.

E-c --Thank you for your posts. I have really learned a lot from you and it reinforces my resolve to do it this year. Have you looked at the dietdoctor site. It's very informative, too. Thanks again.
