Half-heartedly counting calories apparently works if you don't overeat more than once a week or so and you make sure you eat at home most of the time. I'm really pleased with how consistent my weight loss has been, despite some big life changes.
188.0 lb Lost so far: 18.0 lb.    Still to go: 13.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
losing 0.3 lb a week
