Ochapin's Journal, 10 October 2016

Hello all, am a just turned 62yr old retired Army male who started this diet at 422.5lbs. In the military exercise and diet were no problems. after 21 years of that, got remarried to my lovely present wife with four young children and started 2nd career as heavy truck mechanic for a large waste management company. Over the next 18 years progressed up the ladder to a corporate buyer in procurement. Each step was less physically demanding finally ending up in a cubicle When the company decided to restructure, our whole department was let go and I decided to retire. Children were grown and out so it was just the two of us, bills under control and now could pursue my hobbies(model railroading and wooden model ship building). And the weight just kept on coming. I have always done all the cooking and grocery shopping and while I don't snack I do love big portions.
End result, since 1995, I have gained over 225 extra pounds, gotten type 2 diabetes, hospitalized 6 times for cellulitis, extreme arthritis in the knees and a host of other medical conditions, none of which are very healthy. I have tried many times to diet and lose weight before, but after losing a few pounds the lure of the french fries attacks and we are back where we started or worse, and so here we are!
This August on the scale again and at 425.5 Lbs and having been that for two months I decided enough was enough and I had to get serious. So on my own I started my diet plan consisting of cutting back the number of carbs but not limiting food choices and portions. The idea was to make changes I could keep, to lose weight consistently, and still enjoy whatever I wanted to eat. Instead of eating a starch every dinner, maybe only 2-3 times a week, and a smaller portion. Then in the end of September a Bariatric doctor moved into my primary care physician's office so I decided to make an appt and see what she could do for me. She has put me on this diet- LCHF - low carb/high fat and wants me under 30 carbs per day. on my own I was doing 130-180 carbs a day. Also am on a prescription appetite suppressant pill once a day. So with this now after 2 weeks I have lost 10 lbs and am presently at 385.6LBS. we will see how it goes. This time I am determined to make continual progress, even with with my bad knees exercise as walking is a real painful problem. We are in the journey and congrats to all of you who are the same road!
398.0 lb Lost so far: 24.5 lb.    Still to go: 173.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
