DairyKing's Journal, 02 December 2011

Ran an easy 2 miles this morning on the treadmill because I want to do a longer run tomorrow. Discipline, discipline, discipline. I've got a lot to do this weekend, but I've got to keep reminding myself that getting in shape is just as important as anything else I've got to do. Weekends are a little tougher for me, but not for the same reason as a lot of other people experience. Some turn into couch potatoes on the weekend and eat all kinds of things they shouldn't - without even thinking about it. My problem is totally different: I work my butt off on Saturday, and don't make time to eat. Then when supper finally rolls around, you guessed it - I tend to overindulge. I probably need to take a lunch wherever I go, like I do for work. Maybe that will help. It's usually one extreme or the other - I starve on Saturday and forget to eat, in which case I drop weight and put it right back on; or I overindulge in the evening. Make it stop! Ok; I'm going to be more disciplined.

I considered atheism but there weren't enough holidays.

DK - sometimes I just confess my weakness outloud. I tell my husband before we start eating (when I am caught in a day like you described)... "Hey, I'm starving! ...But you know what, I stink at 'knowing when to stop'." - So he helps me. That old 'tried and true' message about it taking a certain amount of time for your brain to begin to send messages to your tummy, and then back again... that you are full... well, when I am really hungry... I just don't listen. I guess. So I told my husband about this issue... and we agreed if I felt like I was in one of those moments, I would speak up and just say... WOW! I'm starving tonight! Then he helps to distract me, and remind me... to eat slowly, take sips of my water or coffee - heck sometimes he reminds me to breathe!!! But all in all... it really helps. I take my time. Sometimes I have an extra ounce or two of protein - if I am still hungry I will always have seconds of just veggies if I want them! How much damage can one do to themselves w/ a green bean? :) Anyway... hope that helps! You're doing awesome! Keep up the great work!!!

Thanks! I think that's a pretty good idea - another opportunity for my wife to feel like she is part of the equation. She is really trying, and it is benefitting both of us. She is starting to cook for only two people instead of six - even though there was always only two of us - at least in the last few years. I've done what you said concerning exercise, where I'll tell her the night before, "I'm really having a tough time getting up and getting on the treadmill when the alarm goes off, so if you hear it, or you are already up, help me out." And she does.

You have a good attitude and great perception. You cant know what to work on if you dont see it! Take healthy food with you on Saturday and keep your self fueled ! Great job on the exercise. You will grow to love it, if you havent already!!

That's great, DK. Some people wouldn't be able to pull off this kind of strategy if they don't have a fantastic support system at home, but since I knew you do!!! I thought maybe you could talk this one out w/ her and figure out a way to 'combat' the problem.

Have a great weekend. I know you already know that not eating all day hinders your journey so I won't have to nag ;) but I will suggest to have ready to go healthy foods available wherever you are. I almost always have apples and some kind of nuts with me. So even if the day is getting away from me I can snack on something healthy. I think it's great you are keeping your wife involved. I'm sure she feels good about experiencing your journey with you. Have a great weekend. Don't forget to eat!
