SeanKelly's Journal, 28 July 2016

OK, for those that don't know me (and probably most of the rest of you as well), please skip this. I'm mostly recording this so I can look back and say that's when I did that.

On Monday morning, July 11, I weighed in at 282.6 I'd been stuck in the 280s for almost a month (since June 15) and was getting frustrated at how my body was fighting to keep weight on. Nevermind the fact that I felt better than I have felt in decades. Around the same time I got Dr. Jason Fung's new book and started learning about the benefits of fasting. So I decided I would try fasting for a longer period. I had already been mostly on an 18:6 IF so how bad could it be? I did a 3 day fast and the weight fell off. Amazingly even though I started eating again on Wednesday evening the weight continued to fall off through the weekend. I was feeling so good I went for a couple of long rides (biking is my favorite form of exercise) I didn't eat carbs (other than high fiber veggies) but Monday morning I was up again. And again Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday I was back up at 279. I'd stopped logging my weight on FS because it was embarrassing. I'd been planning a night off at an Italian restaurant for almost 2 weeks. I had hoped to be in the low 270s so a bump of a pound or two wouldn't matter and here I was the day of almost 7 pounds up from my low. I'd been listening to a podcast interview of Dr. Dominic D'Agostino and in it, he discussed the efficacy of treating cancer with a ketogenic diet. He said quite simply that if he had a history of cancer in his family he would fast 5-7 days every 3 or 4 months. That cancer cells cannot metabolize ketones they only feed on glucose so being in a fasting state of ketosis effectively starves cancer. My mom died of breast cancer, her father died of pancreatic cancer, my father's dad died of leukemia. So he was talking to me.

That's when I decided to declare war on my body. I decided I would not break from the plan. I went out, had Apple Gorgonzola salad, Fettuccine Alfredo, Prosciutto stuffed Chicken and Meatballs. Then I didn't eat again until last night 5 days later. I'm not recommending this for anyone, this is just what I did for myself. If you are thinking about trying it, it's really important to get your potassium, magnesium, and sodium. I didn't do that at first and Saturday night I woke up at 4am with cramps in both legs in muscles I didn't even know existed or had any clue how to stretch out. Since then I've had a magnesium citrate supplement and two cups of chicken or beef bullion every night. Another thing to probably not do if you are fasting is start reading Reddit's ketorecipes subgroup. That's just torture.

Anyway, now I'm down again and now you know why. We'll see how my body reacts. I will ultimately win, but if my body would submit and work with me instead of against me, things would go much easier.

Sean, this is going to sound a little wacky and woo-woo, but I'm going to suggest not declaring a war on your body. I was in a similar pattern of bouncing up and down around the same number, and was ready to tear my hair out. Then I remembered that there IS a mind-body connection. I use an energy psychology technique (EFT) to communicate with my body, and it's amazingly effective. So, I decided to use it to have a little chat with my body about how WE metabolize things, and the weight has just been sliding off since. Form an agreeable partnership with your physical form, instead of an antagonistic one. Yes, you still need to pay attention to nutrients and water, etc, but when you're not fighting with your body, it cooperates much better. You are a champion. I wish everyone reads this word for word and twice if necessary. I am reading this while drinking my better than bullion. No really, it's called better than bullion. A serving is 1 tsp but I use 1/3 in 8 oz of hot water. Plenty salty for me. Way to go Seankelly. Proud of you for not quitting.

Sean, you are on the right path. I am living this way for three months already. As a physician I am ashamed to found the LCHF not in my textbooks but in sport sites. I work in cardiac surgery ICU and feeding people is a part of my daily work. LCHF feeding has a wide spectrum and the ketogenic diet is the therapeutic side long used in medicine, and with exciting new applications. It gave me the answers I was searching for years. You are on the right path. Go on. Tray "Eat fat, get thin" book and watch Dr. Peter Attia, Dr. Stephen Phinney, Jeff Volek, Thomas Seyfried on Youtube.

Sean, I'm proud of how well you've done. I know it's been a battle for you, I've watched your weigh-ins bounce up and down, but I knew you would zero in on how to best make the plan work for YOU, and it's awesome to watch you smoke those pounds off, brother! Great job.

@mskestrela I see where you are coming from and I have been pondering meditation. Maybe I will start that this weekend. I will check out the video though. @chesgreen, where do you get better than bullion? I've been using the little wrapped cubes from Costco, two cubes in my 20 oz coffee cups with some instant hot water. It's so savory, I told my wife it feels like I'm cheating on my fast when I drink it. @dimirovd thanks for the recommendations. I've heard of Peter Attia, I will look into the rest.

Better Than Bouillon is usually right in the same section of the store with the cubes. It comes in jars, and there are lots of flavors. It's like a thick paste, and *really*good!

Hey Seankelly, guess what's for dinner tonight? Better than bouillon lobster with butter in hot water. Yup, logged it and can't wait to get off this highway, do all my honey do's and sit down and enjoy.

I wish we could find the boullion product here! Sounds good!
