Well I was told today that I look like a Saudi Princess, I'm going to take that as a compliment. On the other hand, two people asked me if I was a Nunn today?!? Never heard that one before...

People make assumptions based on our appearance, Sad, but true.

Yeah, but I was wearing a bright teal abaya with black lace borders and matching hijab! Most of the time I see Nuns wearing black...

Maybe they thought you were an 'Uptown Funk' nun? LOL Most folks in the US aren't used to seeing a woman with her hair covered, especially in the summertime, unless they're nuns. The outfit sounds pretty!

You must represent a minority in your area. I live in the Twin Cities. We have a vigorous Muslim community. Lots of halaal stores very near my home and work.

I wish there were Halaal stores around me. There is only really one in the whole city (san diego) and it's hard to get to by bus (I don't drive).

Hi! I never really comment on here - but you came at the top of my feed. I'm also a convert Muslim, when I started wearing hijab I heard the same things - including 'are you sick?' :P Being compared to a nun is a better than a lot of other things, and would indicate a little more respect than often comes from many individuals who do not understand/ respect the choice. I am also in the Twin Cities where LadyinDenim is, and in the beginning was only really aware of one halal store that I trusted for meat. I've since discovered many more - I would say keep looking :) The Bay Area also has a pretty big Muslim community from what I have heard. Also, just in general as a convert...go easy on yourself. There are a lot of other things to learn and pick up on so I've never toiled too much over my halal meat, especially if I cannot find it in good quality (which can be a problem). Anyway...too much info from a stranger, but wanted to say HI anyway.

It seems random people or strangers think it's their duty to comment on whatever in regards to your appearance, behavior, etc. You owe them NO response. Ignorance isn't bliss. To be honest, when I was living in the states I hardly came in contact with someone who was Muslim, but I did know the difference between a nun's habit and a hijab.
