Thought all this might help somebody...all I have learned as a dieter for 50 years..been a mind set that has kept me thin. I walked 10 miles yesterday. Working out at 7 this morning.

TWO MORE THINGS: WE ARE NOT VICTIMS, WE ARE VOLUNTEERS AND IF I AM NOT THE PROBLEM, THEN THERE IS NO SOLUTION. I AM JUST SCREWED IF ITS TOTALLY OUT OF MY HANDS..THE GOOD NEWS IS ITS NOT...ITS TOTALLY IN MY HANDS... IF ITS TO BE ITS UP TO ME.

We can stop being victims. It's not "them". It's us and our choices in life and food.

My slogans and words to live by:

Walk 3 to 7 miles everyday no matter what. Lift weights 3 times a week.

We are addicted to flour, sugar and quantity

Why do I want to hurt myself with food?

I have tasted it all before.

I can always binge at a later date/weight. i.e Dunkin Donuts a very solid corporate model...

What can I create that will approximate this food? Something with less calories, etc. air popped pop corn versus rice cakes, etc.

Weight loss is simple physics. Anyone can lose weight. Its a mind set.

Stay under 1200 calories daily no matter what and you will lose weight.

Write it down-longitudinal data is critical in any setting

Write it down the night before, have the food in the house that you need for that day's planned food.

Get rid of trigger foods, avoid people who "push" food, they have agendas ...and often they are completely unaware of the emotions that are driving them: a need to be needed, keeping you fat so you are less attractive, keeping you fat so your thinness is not a confrontation to them about their food habits or weight.

Journal before you binge. Ask yourself what the hell is going on: usually we are angry, bored, hurt, etc.

Recognize it is the first bite not the last one that sets off the phenomenon of craving...we have to eat "it" all once we start...easier to never start on that binge than to bring it to a halt.

Better to throw it away and I mean destroy it..use soap, cleanser, put it down the garbage disposal unit...and fast...

Be responsible for what goes in your mouth. Its not mommy's fault, daddy's fault, bad genetics, etc. ...its my choice always to overeat.

We have a choice. Consider joining a support group and I do not mean Weight Watchers. A group with a 12 step component. like Overeaters Anonymous or Food Addicts Anonymous in Recovery. We are addicts...not just people with a little overeating problem. Strength in numbers. Yes we react differently to food than other people. Accept that reality. Show up at one of those groups. No commitment. Make a guest appearance. Try it for a month. Food addiction is a medical condition. If we can stop seeing ourselves as helpless victims but as people with a condition that requires sustained lifelong treatment than we can begin to establish some control.I will never react normally around food. Constant vigilance or I will be binging.

Consider veganism. Been my permanent solution and we stop hurting animals and help our mother, The Earth. I follow Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Esselstyn is President Bill Clinton's doc and certainly he can afford the best. And he is thin. A fat free vegan. Both docs on You Tube explaining their rationale.

Ok guys..there is nothing worse in my opinion than being overweight and feeling helpless. We are not helpless.

You point out solid facts. Since January 10th, I've lost 37lbs --- all by walking 3-10 miles a day, no sugar, low carb, and started with weights and yoga a couple months back. Its been life changing. Thanks for reinforcing those positive reminders! (going to check out those Dr's on YouTube 😊)

I just want our sweet good community to know what I think I know..that weight loss, and remaining at a certain weight is achievable. For years I was the victim of my own thinking. It was always someone else's fault: I was the self pity queen and it kept me fat and miserable. It all started with my dad who left when I was 4..he left my mom for another woman...so I was a really pissed off 4 year old kid and I stayed that way till I was 17 and said whoa...I can diet ..to hell with Daddy. Now I am still pissed off at a variety of issues..but I am thin. :) Rather be pissed off and thin then pissed off and fat. Pardon my French. I know..you did not know that was French. :) A lot of this kind of thinking is what I found in AA too..what we have is much like alcoholism...it never goes away..so we must be vigilance. We are bodily and mentally different when it comes to food and the way we eat over time destroys our bodies, corrupts our minds and damages our relationships and guys I am pushing 69 hard..birthday on 8-28-16...you do not want to be an obese old girl. It's too awful. Trust me. I have friends in this situation. They are in hell. Love, Dianne

Please do check out these doctors. The very rich these days are following these guys. More and more very wealthy people are vegan. Like Beyonce. Like Bill Clinton, like Jane Fonda.Like Steve Jobs for the entire after he was diagnosed with cancer. Not talking their politics or relative worth as human beings, but the reality that they have access to the best medical care because of their wealth. I thought I would die with a can of tuna in my hands...I made a decision to go another way. I did not want to wind up like my alcoholic dad who smoked till the day he died at 63 and had a million cardiac procedures. McDougall and Esselstyn promise a recovery from heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. with their diet. McDougall has a website as does Esselstyn. Dr. McDougall will answer email too. I write him all the time.

Good for you! I am trying to convince my husband to give up animal protein and he isn't having it. I am slowing giving up all animal protein. I am a semi vegetarian at this time. I don't know about becoming a vegan, but hey.......I may give that a try. Never really cared too much for meat or dairy anyways and it does put weight on me if eaten on a daily basis. I don't consider myself a "victim," but a human who is flawed as all humans are. We ALL have problems; one of mine just happens to be stress eating. Thanks for the compelling post. :)

I agree it's helping, not hurting. Why I am going to give blood again, it's for the rest of this life. Maybe I will save someone else's.

For anyone contemplating veganism as a choice, I would recommend reading Animal Liberation by Dr. Peter Singer. A profound challenging book that proceeds from a moral construct I could no longer deny. If we create hideous suffering in other creatures can we call ourselves moral, or Christian or humane. Can they suffer. Also Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn book called Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease stunned me.These horrible cardiac procedures are a "mechanical solution to a biological problem"..therefore doomed to fail. Both available inexpensively from Amazon. You can even download samples to a tablet or Kindle at no cost. But beware-these are life changing books and once you "know it"you will never tear into a piece of muscle from slaughtered cow, pig, chicken or any other living creature hardwired just like us with the same callous abandon. You cannot "unknow" it once you do. I am grateful to be vegan. A moral decision. And I can save myself from these hideous procedures that only enrich the interventional cardiologists and are literally breaking Medicare. Read up on this please. Bypasses,stenting. caths..all doomed to fail unless we change our eating.

But veganism doesn't come without its own health implications. Anyone choosing that journey needs to do their research or get nutritional guidance from a professional. I was vegetarian for several years followed by several additional years as a vegan and was not in good health because of it. I had several deficiencies. I had done a lot of internet research on my nutritional needs, but it wasn't enough.

Dianne, I agree with your Animal Liberation cause. I have not made the switch, but all I would have to do is spend some time at Farmer John, not far from here, and I'm sure I would. We have lost something like 50% of the animal species already, and we are on the road to extinction ourselves. Florida, and New Orleans is on a path to being underwater, and no one seems to care. I also do believe, it is one thing to call yourself a Christian, and another to walk the walk. I at one time taught Bible study to children, and was always at church.
