Annie42's Journal, 01 July 2016

Long time, no post. Doc put me on an extraordinarily strict diet this past Tuesday. I would seem that I've been under some stress, and it has done wonders to undermine my weight loss efforts. Who knew?

So, this stuff called Cortisol goes into mass production by the adrenal glands when I get stressed. It appears to manifest itself in the form of a large tire around my midriff, and nothing at the gym seems to help it disappear. In turn, the giant tire I have developed has driven up my BP to previously unknown-to-me levels. And, the old thyroid has been playing games.

After the appt, Doc gave me a little kit that I took the hospital. They drew SEVEN, yes 7, vials of blood, to run all kinds of tests on- including a full thyroid panel. To help deal with the BP, cortisol and thyroid, she put on me on the Whole 30 plan and some deep breathing exercises, plus a Cortico supplement. After 48 hours, I had lost 8 pounds. (Me thinks that most of the loss was due to the blood draw.) Was hoping that I'd be able to sleep better at night, but am finding that I can't even do that.

I am on day 4 of this evil diet, ready to pull my hair out. No mayo???? What kind of torture is this? No whipping cream in my coffee? Grrrrr. 4th of July, with no roasted marshies? I am so ready to go cry. Not even lo-carb ice cream.

Other than that, all is well. House is coming along nicely and half of the garden is planted. Got all the kids, daughters in law, and grandkids (3) set to arrive tomorrow. And, now I must go clean house. Have a blessed weekend and holiday all!

Sounds like your Dr. Is treating you with Quackery. And any low fat high carb diet is only going to make you suffer more. A lot of people think I am a little too forward with my advice here. But so be it. If you don't like what I am about to say, then ignore it and continue doing what Dr. Quack prescribes. 1 Find out what your target weight is and multiply that times 10. Then take that number and eat that many calories in an 8 hour window and don't eat again for the rest of the day. Make the calories high fat, and Low carb. about 20 percent of your intake should be protein. Just use the food tracker on this site to help you figure it all out by entering EVERYTHING you eat. Or you can just copy my diet calendar. lol. I get tired of seeing people suffer because of idiot Doctors who don't know their rectum from a hole in the ground in regards to diet and health. Look up LCHF and Intermittent fasting. Turn your health around and put your life back under your control. Ohh and I take my own advice. Its how I do it every day.

I have a couple of friends on the Whole 30 diet. They are pleased with the way they feel and the drop in weight. I know it's hard to change the way we eat. But do what the Dr. says give it a shot and see what happens. Good luck.

Thank you for the support and comments. I'm not suffering to the extent that others might- I am just currently whiny and fussy because I have a sweet tooth and like dairy. I know darn well dairy does not like me, though. I failed to mention that by no means is Whole 30 a low fat diet. It eliminates forms of dairy, certain carbs and grains for a while. Right now, I am allowed to use (quite liberally) olive oil, coconut oil and Ghee- which I am doing. My doc is an Atkins supporter as well. However, just to de-stress the adrenals, many foods are nixed for 30 days, but reintroduced later. Not too much unlike the beginning phase of Atkins, though with this one- you can eat fruit from the get go. I eat eggs, meat and fish, and lots of veggies, as well. As for carbs, I don't over do it, mainly berries and an occasional apple. This is more of a paleo approach- which I am not used to. Since my home burned down in February, and we lost nearly every belonging except for the clothes on our backs, I have been stressed and seem to have internalized it. Understandable, perhaps? My "tire" gradually began appearing since that time. My BP (diastolic) rose incredibly as well. There were then, and there still are plenty of things that remain out of my control. Seeing my doctor for a physical for the first time in 10 years was me reaching out for some help to get my health under control. With the BP, and thyroid behaving such as they are, it seemed prudent to visit the doc for some help. I've done Atkins on and off- mostly on- for 12 years. WTSHTF as in what happened with me and my family, people find themselves in a situation when Atkins or whatever LCHF diet- is not a cure-all method for controlling one's health entirely. I get what you're saying about taking control and agree, Knuckles---- but in the predicament I find myself in, and with the extra challenges I am facing now, something more drastic was needed so I could avoid BP meds. I don't have time and access for the food tracking things right now. Using borrowed computers, and not have full time internet access makes that difficult. Not asking for sympathy here- just wanted you to understand that I am not at all rejecting your suggestions, Knuckles. I'm just not able to count the calories, log eats, and function like I used to. Living in temporary quarters while trying to rebuild at our old location, plus conquer hay season, take care of the farm and the garden, plus the three kids still here at home- is alot to juggle. Counting calories and trying to keep the BP down without help isn't feasible in my world right now. Eating only what is on the plan the doc gave me - for 30 days- I can handle. Its just very hard to get used to- when I've been used to running through drive thrus, inbetween living quarters. Maybe when life gets back to normal. Thank you, both for your support, advice and encouragement.
