erikahollister's Journal, 24 June 2016

I'm a gardening teacher. I work with incarcerated youth, court-involved. They can be challenging, but sometimes they get into it and enjoy the work, the sunshine, seeing things grow and the teamwork. Plus they get strawberries and flowers for their mom's and girls.

Anyway, this has traditionally been my best season for losing weight, because I'm out in the gardens sweating buckets every day for hours. The trick will be to replace that energy expenditure with other exercise when the season ends; gym trips and walking. I do feel good. Very active, tan, losing weight, keto adapted. It's a sweet spot. And I'm making progress on my sleep: going to bed by 9PM, so that even if I wake up at 3 or 4, I'm still functional. The early summer weather has been dry and beautiful so far here. We're going to hit 90 and humid for the first tie on Sunday.

All my 6 gardens are planted, irrigated and mulched, so I'm feeling ready to the heat. And ready for a break; our semester just ended and I won't be teaching for two weeks. I'm year-round, so I'm not totally off, but will get a couple of long weekends and some admin and planning time. :) in the air conditioning!
We'll see if that change slows down my weight loss.

Debra, Thanks! I'm paid to work with at-risk youth who have been arrested and locked up. Yes, I work in gardens, but that's just the setting and method of working with the kids. It's a whole lot more than gardening! That said, it's a great way to work with them. So many who don't do so well in the classroom feel more comfortable using their hands and bodies outside, getting dirty and wet! It is good work both on the gardening end and on the therapeutic teaching side of things. I feel lucky to have found this work.

It sounds very rewarding and very trying at the same time. Something about the manual labor and the rewards of bringing things to life in a garden that are very therapeutic. Not only that, but the skills of gardening come in handy too when you look at it from a survival point of view. Are these urban or rural type kids?

Mixed, but more urban - gang-bangers. They're pretty surprised that they're expected to garden. Some like it, some refuse. It's a class: Horticulture. Many have no prior experience. Some of the Puerto Rican kids have strong farm and garden culture; that's fun.

It would be interesting seeing their reactions to digging in the dirt.

Wow what an awesome career! It must be rewarding to change lives and see things grow! I'd say to enjoy the AC while you can! Really interesting career, you must have a lot of patience and kindness!

What an interesting and rewarding field of work!! In our yard we have three avacado trees (not in season yet) two Noni fruit trees and many rose bushes and hibiscus trees. Poinciana trees are very popular and grow huge here and are so beautiful. Enjoy your break and the AC! And good luck with your continuing weight loss!
