Got to STOP the emotional eating roller coaster! Over eating isn't doing anything to help my dying friend and /or her family...

And most importantly it's not going to do anything to help you. I've been an emotional/stress eater for a while now and just came to terms that if I don't quit I will be the one facing some serious health issues. Now, I find comfort in journaling and exercising. Started doing Pilates and that puts me in such a calm/peaceful state. I do wish you comfort and peace while trying to deal with this unfortunate situation. Just don't forget to take care of YOU. Rosemary, hugs to you my friend. I know that what you are going through is very difficult. The last time I was in that situation I started smoking again and it was very very hard to quit, but eventually I managed it. You are correct that it is not doing anything to help them, nothing can help them short of a miracle. Health-wise you are doing yourself considerable damage. One of my customers at the PO the other day said something that stuck in my head and might be relevant to where you are right now. She said "When you find yourself in a hole, the best thing to do is STOP DIGGING!" I know it feels almost impossible for you to lose weight right now, but you can stop gaining which will limit the damage this spiral is doing to you. Stop the sugar, cakes, icecream....all that comfort food that we stuff down our emotions with. Feel the emotions and let them out, then say no to self destruction by passing on all of the sweets and starchy casseroles that seem to pop out of the woodwork around these times. We love you and we wish you all of the best!

In your spot, I would pass on the in-your-face sweets and eat the starchy casseroles.
