Herbie's Journal, 04 May 2007

Hi all,
I'm new to the site and new to dieting in general. In my 20s I had a pretty active lifestyle and, although I've never been skinny, was at a healthy weight (around 135). In the past eight years I've completed a PhD and had two babies, which has led to a more sedentary lifestyle and the gain of about 35 pounds. Yikes! Reading that is a bit daunting. So, now that I'm done with school and am 36 years old, I'm trying to take charge of my fitness.

I am not sure about my current weight, I put 170 b/c it's what I weighed at the doctor about a month ago. I'm probably less than that now, I need to get a new battery for my scale at home so I can get consistent measurement. I'm improving my exercise routine also to be at least an hour three times a week.

My parents have been on the South Beach diet and lost some weight, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm generally a healthy eater, not a lot of sweets or potato chips or anything like that. Giving up carbs is hard for me. The extra challenge is that I now have 2 preschoolers who eat TONS of fruit, drink juice, love noodles, and want to feed me cookies. So, will power will be a crucial part of this whole process for me.

Anyway, I look forward to this journey! Any tips or words of wisdom are appreciated.
