doit2it's Journal, 06 November 2009

Ok, it's DAY 18 for me...and the fact that it's Friday isn't bad either.

Things are looking up today. I've decided I need to track and limit my refined sugar and sodium intake, something I wasn't doing before. I recently read that insulin, triggered by the refined sugars actually inhibits metabolism of body fat for fuel. In checking my diet journals I saw that my sugar intake has been too high, although my daily calorie intake has been fine. (I read that sugar should be no more than 8% of daily calories.) And we all know about sodium intake and fluid retention, don't we? This may explain why my weight loss has been slow, even though my calorie intake and exercise have been good. So I'm in the process of making adjustments and will see what happens...I hope this is the key to firing up my fat-burning furnace. Sometimes this is such a damn struggle... but I suppose it's the struggle that makes sweet the reward.

Let's all have a good weekend.

loosin, The idea is to keep myself so busy trying to figure it out that I forget to eat!

Doit, I think you will most definitely see a change after you limit sugar and salt. The other thing is that your body can run on sugar for a short time but, ultimately, it'll leave you craving more. If you fill yourself with nutrient dense foods (greens, veggies, beans, etc), you will feel more satisfied and you won't crave the sugary salty foods. Even after one week of coming back to this way of eating (just got myself back on track), I am already actually CRAVING leafy greens instead of sugar.

Oh, I started a 7-day no sugar challenge -- hoping it'd help me kick the habit and keep myself accountable. It starts on Monday. No pressure--- :) I will probably do it again as the holidays get closet.

Thanks beets...maybe I'll join the no sugar challenge. NO sugar will be difficult but maybe I need to do just that!

Sugar does make a big difference. I notice it myself-lower sugar weeks mean weight loss, higher ones don't even when calories are the same. I need to do the same thing you are really so thank you for the reminder! Good luck this week!

Thanks dawn...Why does it take so long to figure this stuff out? Oh well, it won't be ez to cut out the sugar entirely but maybe that's the only way to break the addiction. It'll be interesting to see if I have withdrawal symptoms, like headaches, which is what happens for a day or two when I drop the caffeine. OK, I'm mentally prepared to do this. Let's go!

loosin...Like they say, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it! I heard the latest statistic is 67% of Americans are obese. We are on our way to becoming part of the elite 33%. Did you read Dawn's post above? I think we may be onto something with this sugar thing.

Interesting dialogue about sugars. What about artificial sweetners? Does the body and the brain react to these as they would to natural sugar? I do not eat real sugar at all. I eat SMALL amounts of sweetner.

"Does" in the third sentence of the post above should read "Do." Plural! He-he-he-he-he!

The sweeteners probably do not trigger an insulin release. I have always avoided them; my view being that it's better to consume small amounts of real foods like butter and sugar, than artificial products. Now I must re-think that in regard to the sweeteners.
