AuntieJan's Journal, 19 September 2011

Just recieved my offical stats from the 5k race Saturday.

Runner #125 Age 54 Melbourne FL Time/Pace 48:09.1/ 15:30
I was 58 out of 76 in my age group and 707 overall out of about 985 entries.

Good checkup today number-wise and I talked to him about the issues with tingling and numbness. Doctor is sending me for X-Rays on my back, he believes the problem may stem from an age related degenerative condition in my back which is typical and something to pay attention too but not to be alarmed about. The area of concern is L5 S1 to be exact. He would prefer an MRI but since I have no insurance I can't have it, too expensive, then I would probably be referred to a back specialist which does not exist within their sliding scale providers.

My only hope may lie in the Chiropractor tomorrow, which my Dr. also thought to be a good idea. I sure would hate to think my running days are over before they even start!

Auntie - Great Stats! Am so sorry about your medical situation - I've lived without insurance before and it is no fun. Am sure your continued weight loss can't hurt anything.

Great job on the race! Whoo Hoo!! Sorry that insurance is such an issue for medical care, for everyone. Oh, darn, now don't get me started. I hope the chiropractor can help.

Yes I think so too Buffy, and yes having no insurance sucks but it's just a fact of my life right now. Thanks very much for stopping by!

I know GG, I get ramped up about the subject too but I try to stay away from those kind of discussions here. I empathize with you completely! Anyway thanks for the kudos!

Jan, great awesome that you did so well! Sorry about the back issues. I so understand about the med insurance...I don't have any coverage either, and pray mightily that my Lupus stays under control without any serious medical intervention. That could prove to be disastrous for us. Of course, God has it under control, right? Hugs and have a great day!! You are awesome!!

Thanks Bren, I have had some good results with chiropractors before and this guy comes highly recommended. Surgery does not sound fun, and it's not an option anyway with no insurance. Thanks again!

Thank you Stef, I no Lupus is not an easy condition to deal with so I understand completely. I do ask God daily for guidance and I know I will find the right answers. Hugs back!

I will say that chiropractors are geniuses and I would go regularly if I could afford it (they are crazy money here!) - I'm crossing fingers they solve your problem :)

Those are some awesome stats, congrats! I completely understand the problems of not having health insurance (I even work for an MD and he doesn't even offer it. Go figure). I actually work in the insurance department, have you tried asking around at some third party diagnostic companies. I know there are many in the area, and for MRI's they are around 300 dollars (w/ contrast) compared to the thousands the hospitals would charge you, and I know of one who would even come pick you up and drive you home afterwards.

Thanks Tracy! They aren't terribly expensive here, my first appt. is 30 USD and subsequent visits will range between 40 and 70, which is a lot less than MDs. I will find out shortly!

Hey there JS thank you! I cannot believe your place does not offer insurance, that is insane. I did some internet surfing yesterday for lower cost MRIs and didn't come up with much so far. But I haven't given up yet!

It is insane, especially since he always complains when he sees a self pay patient. It's stupid. Anyways, if you ever need any help, I would be more than happy to make a few calls around for you. I know we both live in CFL, so I can help you choose the best ones. Just let me know!

Thanks for your kind offer Funky! I used to work for a veterinarian and he was also a tightwad. Go figure.
