Lugnutz's Journal, 11 February 2016

I retired on Jan 31st after 38 years at the same job. joined planet fitness and have worked out every week day since. so far having no problems staying away from fast food and snacks. have lost the same 40 pounds 3 different times in my life. I'm pretty optimistic and my wife is very supportive. Only difference this time is that i'm feeling my age and my knees hurt a little after exercise. hopefully this will get better as i get used to exercising again.

Good luck on your goals, having a good attitude and support of your spouse really helps! :)

Ultimately, it's the whole life change thing that will help you keep off the weight. That's my own real concern, once I reach my goal weight: how to keep it off for good. Takes a whole different approach to food and eating than we've likely had before.

Move a little more, eat a little less, that's sure the way to go about it. I've been told by physical therapists that muscles grow when they're resting after exercise, and as we age (we're like fine wine, right?), we need more time between exercise sessions for that healing to happen. The pro body builders may work out intensely just three days a week with rest days in between. Your doctor and a good physical trainer or physical therapist can give you advice on how to exercise and how often to prevent that knee pain from growing into a stress injury.

Another thought: Sometimes the trainers will recommend working different parts of the body on different days. That can get you into the gym daily without overstressing any particular joints, allowing the knees to rest on "arm" days and the shoulders to rest on "leg" days, and so on.
