Discouraged at gaining weight even when following the plan perfectly. I made a lot of sacrifices this week and feel betrayed by my body and the scale. Had a really vigorous workout with my personal trainer mid-week that left me drained and sore. Could it be possible that I am retaining water/building muscle? I am also going to try to eat my full 1700 calories per day so that my metabolism doesn't take a nap. Maybe with this change and some patience with the working out I will have some tangible/visible results next week.

Your personal trainer should have explained to you that when you workout hard, your muscles get little tears in the fibers and retain water to hep them heal. If your muscles are sore, you know you are retaining water temporarily. It can make the scale go up. Don't let it discourage you. You will get smaller and lean because you are losing fat/inches. It doesn't always reflect on the scale right away. As yo build muscle, you will burn more calories (hence why men lose faster because they have more muscle). I can go for a long bike ride and be up 4 or more pounds the next day. Just keep going and think about the big picture and not just what the scale says. The scale can lie. Also, google "why the scale lies" for water weight gain insights.
