I had a super small banana and a KIND bar today (20 net carbs) .. it really upped my net carbs today and is no where on my diet. BUT, this is not a "oh poor me I cheated post" this is "I took a step forward and ate something else other then phase 2 of Atkins" or "my trainer is nagging me to eat more so Imma try it and test my boundaries with different foods" post. I've been feeling insecure about moving forward on my journey lately and I've been cheating a lot and i think the underlying issue is i feel deprived of "normal" foods and I'm straight up bored. I've worked my way thru the carb ladder and reached 8/9 of 10 rungs and I'm 1-4 lbs away from the goal I set in 01/01. I think I can afford this.. I think planning and thinking out new foods may help cut back the cheats. And I think it its only 1 banana a week or other new food a week like pineapple or a plum, i wont die.. It may slow my loss but I'm not even worried about that bc i work out soooo much and have a huge daily calorie deficit and kinda feel that even though low carb helps, its not the driving factor in my weight loss right now. This post is to kinda convince myself this is ok but also to get my buddies opinion bc I new to actually doing low carb successfully and moving forward successfully. I think eating a fruit is a way lot better then last weeks blizzard. bahahahah With that said, I feel compelled to change my setting from Atkins to "following my own diet"
What are everyone thoughts....Let me add... no one will hurt my feelings if you think this is not a good idea.. I need advice and guidance before i can make a educated decision and I dont intend to "throw it all to the wind." I was thinking follow my low carb diet guidelines but allow myself more liberties instead of being so hard on myself.... bc I feel like I can sometimes be my own worst enemy.. Ok this feel like rambling now.. So peace out !!

I have also experienced some of the anxiety related to the fact that you have attained your weight goal, do you let yourself change your routine. It took me a long time to lose the weight and I am afraid that if I change anything, I will slide back into old habits. That fear is one reason I go through cycles - I convince myself I can handle a "cheat" and then I do cheat BIG TIME. Then I feel guilty and compensate for the next few days. My weight is maintaining, but I know this is not a healthy approach. I suspect you are on the correct path of only slightly modifying your diet but on a more consistent basis. I think the science is sound - you know what calories you are eating, what calories you are burning - I say go for it. Increase your carbs, reduce your deficit, but do it smartly. Fight the panic that I am experiencing of any change will be a disaster - maybe I will take my own advice.

mattsoc. too late, that panic has set in and im not sure how when and if I should move forward. I do know this is the exact spot I lost it when I failed atkins 3 yrs ago so I need to really really do this right. Basically, Im following Atkins OWL but not 100% bc Ive had 1-2 slip ups a week for 3-4 weeks now. I can never get passed the beans ladder and move into vegetable juice then "other fruit" and the book i use doesn't specify what other fruits after berries and melons so Im like now what.. I also want to add Im a control freak and not having a plan in place or list to follow or book to read or meal plan does not work for me. I have to have everything planned out or I start guessing and not giving two ef's and just eat whatever. Ive learned this the hard way. Hence the state of confusion today. hehe

Note about changing your 'DIET' in FS, it will reset your starting weight to the weight you are when you change it. Not sure if that is important to you, but it is to me to see the overall numbers since I started (again) and not from the time I adjusted what my profile says. Methinks that FS things that the 'weight lost' so far is on that specific diet vs. you're whole attempt. I wouldn't update it, just note it in your bio, that's what I did. On the food matter, figure out what works for you. I've been trying to up my calories with just looking at the macros alone regardless of the food; turns out it's been defaulting to peanut butter which I'm finding REALLY HARD to just have 34g of it for 200cal. The fork/knife keeps falling back in for more. #SMH. Carb's are still low but the higher calories 1750 - 2000 are really turning up my appetite and I have less satiety with what I eat. All that being said, be sensitive to your bodies changes to desires of food. You'll stumble across and even stub your proverbial hunger toes on some food that may cause you to fall back into old habits, be sensitive to those, what ever they are. There is definitely nothing wrong with adding foods back in if you can continue proceeding with the speed and direction you want to accomplish. We'll support ya regardless!

FROSTY , omg thanks for that info .. i would die if it reset my whole profile.I think today I'm just really feeling tired of protein and vegetables but I also want to admit, I'm doing it to myself bc Im so scared to move forward for fear or stalling or gaining I don't allow myself anything else and I really really can see that this is not a healthy relationship with food. Maybe moving onto maintenance on atkins would be the way to go? I've never even read that section of my book bc Ive never succeeded this far. I just glanced at it and I think that this might be the answer. It says to move into maintenance when you have less than 10lbs to loose and I have more than that but Ive already lost so much ... and I can always toggle back to OWL if I gain or stall right.. OMG this is a break thru!!

I'm in the same state of confusion Red. Now I will eat the occasional cantaloupe, half an apple, some popcorn at a movie (really high carbs)...totally off plan and it's usually on a weekend. Then I track how it has affected the scale. Am finding it doesn't go up much but I also don't lose. With 7ish pounds to go I want to keep losing but not upset if it doesn't tumble off as it did in the beginning. Guess it is normal to start thinking in real world terms how to keep it off and eat more foods we enjoy.

Alpha , I do sorta the same.I buy a cantelope about once every two weeks, I have maybe a handful of popcorn once a month and I havent added the apple.. I was reading the suggested meal plan for maint, in the book and its almost the excact thing Im doing but you add in some new fruits and sweet potatoes which I just had a few days ago so I kinda feel like I sorta doing maint but then everytime i get comfortable i back off. I think Imma start maint monday bc i have to start on a monday always hehe...

I think with that small amount to lose, it probably is not as critical, as someone trying to lose a bunch. And, I would think, as long as your caloric intake is not way out of line, eating an occasional potato or fruit will not cause you to gain weight. The real danger would be if you are way exceeding the recommended calories and then add something outside the atkins plan, you may experience a weight gain.

It is a crap shoot, Red! I say you may be at the point where calories in less than calories out could work for you. Deficit should continue loss- maybe slower but you have to find a way to ease into maintaining. Introduce things slowly and see if you still lose.

Sorry, it won't reset everything, just the amount that you've lost to this point when looking at someone's quick bio. For instance, look at my 'Weight History' or even yours. See how I changed my diet earlier this year from a failed start the year before? You've also restarted your Atkins 3 times since you've been on FS. The info is still all there, but if you were to change your 'Diet' now, all people will see is that you've lost a few pounds vs. the 79lbs that you've demolished so far. I thought about changing mine to 'Keto' but that would change my starting weight of 'Keto', but I've been keto all along...

It's all an experiment; Atkins said in his book that this was the "Atkins and You diet" because every body is unique. Your body may have healed considerably over the 10 months and your carbohydrate tolerance may be fairly high now. It is risky to bring up your carbs dramatically (the recommendation in Atkins' old books is 5 gr per day for 1 wk, then another 5) but boredom and cheats are risky too. No guilt allowed, though! If you start to gain, you know what to do - back to induction! Since you're aiming for real food then it ought to be fairly safe.

I think that as long as you introduce new foods gradually (don't go eat a whole pizza tomorrow, etc.), and maintain your calorie deficit, I would go for it! However, be in tune with your body and notice how you feel and any weight changes. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Fruit is good for you! Bananas are chock full of nutrients.

This might be a good time to rethink being on a diet at all. All the best.

I don't follow a specific diet so I really can't offer a lot of advice. BUT... If losing weight was easy, everyone would be doing it. You have to be proud of what you have accomplished – I know I would be. No matter what you decide to do, we all will support you. We all have struggles, but know that there are people of there that care about you, who cheer your accomplishments and are supportive of you when you stumble.

I don't know that what I have to say will add anything to the discussion, but I think that we are all individuals and we have to find a long term way of living and eating that works for us, with our unique individual traits/peculiarities/challenges. A set plan, designed by someone else, may work...or we may need to tweek it a bit, or we may need to come up with something different, maybe a hybrid plan that fits us. Me personally, I can't do LCHF long term...tried it, doesn't work for me. So I do a flexible eating plan, nothing is off limits, but count calories/target macros/try to make overall healthy choices. Some days are better than others and there are ups and downs, but long term it's path I can continue to travel and live with. The important thing is to keep on the path, get back on it if we stray...an we will all stray to some degree or other at times. Wishing you continued success as you work out what is the best continuing path for you.

Ever since I hit my original goal(170) I have been all over the place. I am watching your posts for ideas. I adjusted my goal down again though so I need to buckle down again and not let myself stay comfy here. I am losing for health reasons though. I would be perfectly happy hanging out here around 170 lol after being over 200 for awhile....

So Ive decided to continue on my path and add in more fruits and veggies and see how it goes. Maintenance says you can add in grains which I will never do bc I KNOW they are a huge trigger for me.. and i feel like with all my "cheats" I'm basically on maint for the most part bc the foods Im eating are on this list mainly (except that blizzard and bday cake) but Im counting them as cheats since they arent on the meal plan Im following which kinda explains why Im still losing when I ate some beans and a V8. I just need to remind myself its ok to eat these things now and that I have to practice self control.. Also, I dont think I can get comfortable with potatoes or corn.. ever again so leaving those out. I will report back on this subject in next Sunday so I have a full week to work on this and will try my hardest to log everything and not panic if i eat 40 net carbs in one day ..
